Winfield Thwarts Reds Sweep Attempt in San Diego



National League
Chicago 2 at Montreal 6
-Rusty Staub hit his 23rd home run and Frank Tavares (43SB) stole two bases to help Steve Rogers (9-12, 3.58) end the Expos eight game losing streak
Pittsburgh 1 at New York 8

The last place Mets jump all over John Candelaria (13-9, 2.82) on their way to a series win versus the division leaders. Jerry Grote went 3-for 3 with three RBI’s and Jon Matlack (9-15, 3.73) pitched eight strong innings for the win
Philadelphia 4  at St. Louis 5 (10)

Ken Reitz (8) hit a game winning home run in the 10th off Tom Hilgendord (4-4, 2.84). The Cardinals had blown a 4-0 lead.
Houston 4 at Los Angeles 0
-Bob Knepper (13-2, 2.25) continues his phenomenal rookie campaign by scattering nine hits in a huge shutout of the Dodgers. Mike Ivie ripped his 35th home run of the season. Next up for the Astros is a showdown with the 2nd place Reds at the Dome.
Cincinnati 3 at San Diego 4
-The Reds fail to complete a sweep through Southern California thanks to Dave Winfield (19HR< 27SB) who went 4-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs and two RBI’s. Joe Morgan (27HR) hit two solo home runs but it wasn’t enough for Cincy
Atlanta 10 at San Francisco 3

All of the Braves runs were driven home by the 6-9 batters in the order, including three by Catcher Pete Varney as they maul Charlie Williams (2-12, 3.80) and the Giants.

NL East: The Pirates lead by 10 games. Their magic number is 7
NL West: The Astros lead the Reds by 4 games. The teams play three games in Houston after tomorrow’s mutual off day.

American League:
Baltimore 4 at Boston 7

Bob Watson broke a 1-1 tie in the 6th with a three-run double and Carl Yastrzemski lashed his 13th home run of the year in the 8th to turn a 4-2 lead into a 7-2 advantage as the Sox take the first of two critical games versus the Orioles. Jim Rice also hit his MLB leading 40th home run for Boston and the Orioles stranded fifteen runners.
Detroit 8 at Cleveland 3
-Mark Fidrych (9-9, 3.45) went the distance and John Wockenfuss (5) and Bill Madlock (25) homered for the Tigers
New York 6 at Milwaukee 8
-Tim Johnson’s third hit of the game broke a 6-6 tie in the 8th and Bill Castro (21Sv, 2.15) would come on in the 9th to save a game against his former mates.
California 4 at Chicago 5
-Bill Stein scored the tying run in the 8th and drove in the winning run in the 9th as Don Kirkwood (7-5, 4.75) gets the win in relief against an Angels team that traded him away earlier this season.
Oakland 2 at Kansas City 5
-Steve Busby (15-6, 3.04) went the distance and Frank White (15) hit a three run home run for the Royals.
Minnesota 1  at Texas 7
-Roger Moret (5-3, 3.68) with the five hitter for the Rangers as Leon Roberts (17) and Johnny Grubb (16) both hit home runs for Texas.


AL East: The Red Sox extend their lead to 1.5 games over the Orioles. The teams play tomorrow at Fenway.
AL West:  The Royals lead by 13 games and their magic number to clinch is 5
