-The last place Mets jump all over John Candelaria (13-9, 2.82) on their way to a series win versus the division leaders. Jerry Grote went 3-for 3 with three RBI’s and Jon Matlack (9-15, 3.73) pitched eight strong innings for the win

-Ken Reitz (8) hit a game winning home run in the 10th off Tom Hilgendord (4-4, 2.84). The Cardinals had blown a 4-0 lead.
Houston 4 at Los Angeles 0
-Bob Knepper (13-2, 2.25) continues his phenomenal rookie campaign by scattering nine hits in a huge shutout of the Dodgers. Mike Ivie ripped his 35th home run of the season. Next up for the Astros is a showdown with the 2nd place Reds at the Dome.

-The Reds fail to complete a sweep through Southern California thanks to Dave Winfield (19HR< 27SB) who went 4-for-4 with a home run, a stolen base, two runs and two RBI’s. Joe Morgan (27HR) hit two solo home runs but it wasn’t enough for Cincy

-All of the Braves runs were driven home by the 6-9 batters in the order, including three by Catcher Pete Varney as they maul Charlie Williams (2-12, 3.80) and the Giants.

Jim Rice also hit his MLB leading 40th home run for Boston and the Orioles stranded fifteen runners.

-Mark Fidrych (9-9, 3.45) went the distance and John Wockenfuss (5) and Bill Madlock (25) homered for the Tigers

-Tim Johnson’s third hit of the game broke a 6-6 tie in the 8th and Bill Castro (21Sv, 2.15) would come on in the 9th to save a game against his former mates.

-Bill Stein scored the tying run in the 8th and drove in the winning run in the 9th as Don Kirkwood (7-5, 4.75) gets the win in relief against an Angels team that traded him away earlier this season.
