Tiant and Tidrow Combine as Yanks Blank Baltimore



American League:

Luis Tiant (14-8, 2.83) and Dick Tidrow (34Sv, 2.10) shut out the Orioles as Lou Piniella drove in Sandy Alomar in the 4th for the games only run
Milwaukee 5 at Cleveland 6
-Toby Harrah’s 22nd home run of the year was the walk off winner in the 9th off Bill Castro (4-6, 2.23) as the Tribe rally from 5-0 down to win it. John Lowenstein (.269 14HR) hit two home runs and swiped his 15th base of the season for the Indians
Boston 1 at Detroit 2 (11)
-Bill Madlock rapped the game winning double in the 11th as the Tigers keep the Red Sox from taking over sole possession of 1st place. John Hiller (6-6, 3.42) pitched three shutout innings of relief for the win.
Texas 6 at Minnesota 1
-The Rangers erupt for six runs in the 7th inning and Stan Thomas (4Sv, 2.89) pitched three perfect innings to close the game out for the Rangers.
Kansas City 0 at Oakland 1
-Don Sutton (17-7, 2.93) tosses a five hitter outdueling Dennis Leonard (17-9, 3.05) as the A’s run was unearned.
Chicago at California, ppd – rare Southern California rain…
AL East: The Orioles and Red Sox remain tied for 1st. The Yankees trail by 8.
AL West:  The Royals lead by 13.5 games

-The Cubs have won five in a row here at Wrigley to open the seasons final stretch of divisional play. Bobby Murcer hit home run #24 to break a 2-2 tie in the 8th and Bruce Sutter (10-5, 3.01) earned the win in relief
Pittsburgh 5 at Montreal 1 (12)

Dave Parker led off the 12th with his 22nd home run and the Pirates would add three more off rookie Santo Alcala (0-4, 5.48) to win the opener at the Big O. Former Expo John Candelaria got the start for Pittsburgh and pitched seven strong innings.
New York 5 at St. Louis 4

Sergio Ferrer (.271  25SB) scored three runs and stole four bases and Jon Matlack (8-15, 3.83) earned the win as the Mets end a seven game losing streak
Houston 5 at San Francisco 1
-Cesar Cedeno (13HR) homered and drove in four and rookie sensation Bob Knepper (12-2, 2.38) went the distance as the Astros win the opener at Candlestick
