Rice Rips Pair as Red Sox Take Over First

Lucky sevens for George Scott (21HR) and the Yankees as Boomer drives in seven runs with a pair of home runs as the Yanks score seven on Wayne Garland (15-7, 2.94) handing him his seventh defeat. Tom Underwood (12-11, 3.48) went seven innings for the win
Milwaukee 9  at Cleveland 2
-Rookie Jim Gantner (4HR) hit two home runs and fellow rookie Gary Beare (8-11, 3.73) went the distance for the win
Boston 6 at Detroit 4
-The Red Sox are in 1st all alone thanks to two home runs from Jim Rice (38) and a surprising home run by closer Skip Lockwood who racked up save #35
Chicago 0 at California 1
-Frank Tanana (18-9, 3.24) , Terry Forster (3.92) and Chris Knapp (7Sv, 4.81) combine to five-hit the Sox
Kansas City 7 at Oakland 1
-Steve Busby (14-6, 3.12) doesn’t allow an earned run and he, Amos Otis and George Brett each drove in pair

-Greg Luzinski hit a pair of solo home runs (25) and Johnny Oates (6) lashed a three run shot as Nino Espinosa strikes out ten to improve to 6-7, 2.93
Pittsburgh 8 at Montreal 3

Dave Parker had three hits and two RBI’s to pace the Pirates attack and Bert Blyleven (15-5, 3.05) drove in a pair to help himself to victory

Tom Seaver (13-8, 3.00) went the distance and Jerry Martin hit his 8th home run of the year for the Mets

-Fred Norman (10-10, 4.34) strikes out seven Dodgers in four innings to cap nine innings of shutout relief by the Reds bullpen as they gut out a big win at Dodger Stadium.

-A first inning grand slam by Charlie Spikes (17HR) propels the Braves to victory
Houston 5 at San Francisco 4
-Former Astro’ Enos Cabell hit a two run home run, his first of the year, and his sacrifice fly in the 9th pulled the Giants within one but Ken Forsch (32Sv, 2.55) got Jack Clark to fly out with the potential tying run on 3rd

NL West: The Astros maintain a 4.5 game lead over the Reds
