Brewers Sweep Tigers as Oglivie Haunts Former Mates


American League:

George Hendrick hit his 13th home run and Ray Fosse drove in the winning run in the 7th as the Tribe defeat former teammate Ross Grimsley (13-8, 3.91). Rick Waits (7-9, 5.31) made his second straight effective start after being recalled from the minors.
Milwaukee 14 at Detroit 5
-Ben Oglivie goes 4-for-5 and steals two bases at his former team as the Brewers complete a three game series in Detroit and tie the Tigers for 5th in the AL East
Oakland 8 at California 5
-Billy Williams (25th) three run home run in the 9th seals an A’s win that breaks their nine game losing streak.
AL East: The Orioles fall into a dead heat with the idle Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals lead by 14 games

National League
New York 1 at Chicago 2
-Ray Burris (9-9, 4.00), Goose Gossage (3.59) and Tom Dettore (3Sv, 6.17) shut down the Mets and Bobby Murcer hit his 23rd home run as the Cubs have won four in a row
Montreal 1 at Philadelphia 7

Tony Perez drove in three and John Denny (8-13, 4.88) went the distance to hand the Expos their 4th straight defeat
Pittsburgh 4 at St. Louis 10

Lou Brock stole base #58 and passed teammate Bake McBride for the NL batting lead with three hits as the Cardinals win their 7th in a row.
Los Angeles 3 at Atlanta 2
-Bill Russell led off the game with his 4th home run of the season and Burt Hooton (10-15, 3.61) pitched seven innings without allowing an earned run as the Dodgers win their fourth in a row while the Braves have dropped seven straight.
Houston 2 at Cincinnati 5
-George Foster’s 28th home run of the season sealed a pivotal 5-2 win for the Reds. Wasn’t Bill Bonham’s (16-8, 3.13) best outing as he allowed thirteen baserunners in seven innings but it was enough for the win. Cesar Geronimo threw runners out at 3rd and home early in the game..
San Francisco 2 at San Diego 4

Enzo Hernandez broke a 2-2 tie in the 8th with a two run double off Gary Lavelle (4-10, 3.76), making a winner of Padre’ reliever Jerry Johnson (5-2, 3.38)

NL East: The Pirates lead has been cut back to 9 by the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros lead is trimmed back to 4 by the Reds. The Padres are 8 behind.
