San Diego 4 at New York 2
-Dave Kingman (22HR) homered for the third consecutive game – this time against the Padre team that traded him earlier this season – but it wasn’t enough as Steve Garvey (15HR) hit two solo shots for the Padres and Doug Rader added his 9th round tripper of the year. Randy Jones (18-4, 3.25) and Rollie Fingers (27Sv, 3.20) added to their win and save totals.

-Garry Maddox’s single in the 8th proved to be the game winner as the Phillies rally from 3-0 down to beat the last place Giants
St. Louis 5 at Atlanta 3
- Bake McBride (.346) leads the NL in batting after his two hit night and he had the game winning RBI as Lynn McGlothen (9-5, 2.94) gets the better of Dick Ruthven (11-12, 3.77)
Pittsburgh 7 at Cincinnati 3
- Bernie Carbo’s 13th home run of the year was a three-run shot in the 6th to give the Bucs a 4-2 lead and they’d not look back in this opener at Riverfront. Rick Reuschel (14-9, 2.71) went the distance for the win.
Chicago 0 at Houston 7
-Nolan Ryan (17-9, 3.01) strikes out thirteen Cubs in a four-hit shutout – and helped himself with three RBI’s. Ex-Cub Davey Lopes (.283 46SB) had two RBI’s and a stolen base.
NL East: The Pirates lead by 12 games
NL West: The Astros extend their lead back to 3 over the Reds.

-Johnny Grubb lashes a two run single in the 8th off Jim Palmer (14-12, 3.20) to vault the Rangers to victory. Tommy Boggs (12-9, 3.18), Jim Kern (1.87), Stan Thomas (3.35) and Paul Lindblad (5Sv, 3.64) combined on a four hitter for the Rangers
Kansas City 5 at Cleveland 4 (10)
-Make it twelve in a row for the Royals despite two home runs by the Indians Oscar Gamble (28). Amos Otis led off the 10th with a walk, stole his 37th base and scored on a Ruppert Jones single for the eventual winning run.

-Richie Hebner (14) homered for the third time in two days and Milt Wilcox (10-14, 4..38) didn’t allow an earned run in eight innings as the Tigers have won five in a row.

-Tim Johnson’s single plated the go-ahead run in a five run Milwaukee 8th inning as the Brewers rally to win the second of four games with the Angels
