Rivers Throw Puts Rangers Above Sea Level For First Time

American League:
Chicago 3 at Boston 8
-
Jim Rice hit his 36th home run of the season and Carlton Fisk’s 12th was a grand slam as the Red Sox will now look for a four-game sweep of the ChiSox on Sunday
Minnesota 4 at New York 6
-Typical Twins result as Rod Carew, Eric Soderholm and Larry HIsle each have three hits in a losing cause. Lenny Randle, George Scott and Graig Nettles each drove in two for the Yankees.
Texas 9 at Baltimore 8 (11)
-The Rangers are above .500 for the first time in the Reshuffled Deck – but it wasn’t easy. The Orioles rally from 6-2 down in the 9th and almost from 9-6 down in the 11th but Mickey Rivers threw Juan Beniquez out at home to finally stave off the Birds.
Kansas City 4 at Cleveland 6 (10)
-Dennis Leonard (17-8, 3.60) took a 4-1 lead into the bottom of the 9th but the Indians would tie it on a George Hendrick (12HR) three run home run and win it in the 10th on Oscar Gamble’s 30th home run and second of the game. The dramatic win for the Indians ends the Royals twelve game winning streak
Oakland 5 at Detroit 6
-Ron LeFlore (.256 15SB) had three hits and three steals and Bill Madlock ripped his 23rd home run of the season as each team’s respective streaks have reached six games
California 5 at Milwaukee 3
-Denny Doyle and Jason Thompson had RBI singles in the 9th to lift rookie reliever Chris Knapp (1-5, 5.07) to his first MLB victory.

AL East: The Orioles lead is down to a single game over the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals still hold a commanding 15 game lead on the Angels

National League
Los Angeles 2 at Montreal 6
-Larry Parrish (17HR) smacked a pair of solo home runs and Chip Lang (4-5, 3.82) pitched eight strong innings for the win
San Diego 9  at New York 2
-
1975 NL batting champion Al Bumbry (.288) hit an unlikely two triples in a seven run San Diego 5th as the Padres win easily at Shea. Brent Strom (10-9, 4.12) pitched a complete game.
San Francisco 4 at Philadelphia 3
-
Rookie Chris Arnold had three  hits and two RBI’s and Jim Barr (11-10, 3.11), to his credit, now has a winning record on the majors worst team. John Denny (7-13, 5.12) continues to struggle after winning seventeen games in 1975.
St. Louis 10 at Atlanta 9
- Ted Simmons (.323 23 HR) hit two doubles, a home run and drove in six as the Cardinals win a typical slugfest at Fulton County Stadium. The Braves hit three home runs but committed four errors
Pittsburgh 6 at Cincinnati 10
- Manny Sarmiento (2.44) pitched 3.2 perfect innings of relief for his first career save and Dave Concepcion drove in three as a seven run Cincinnati 4th propels them to victory.
Chicago 2 at Houston 13
-Mike Ivie (33HR) hit two home runs and Ed Herrmann added his 5th of the season as each man drove in three in the Astors rout of the Cubs. Cesar Cedeno, Davey Lopes, Tony Scott and Herrmann all had three hits. Rookie Mark Lemongello (18-9, 2.56) had the complete game win

NL East: The Pirates lead is now 11 games over the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros maintain their 3 game lead over the Reds.
