Rice, Red Sox Romp Yanks to Draw Closer to Division Crown



American League
New York 2 at Boston 11

Jim Rice (.333 46HR) goes 5-for-5 with five RBI’s and a home run as the Red Sox pound Catfish Hunter (10-14, 4.55) to complete a sweep of the Yankees. Jerry Remy (.312 50SB) had four hits and two steals and Rick Burleson and Carlton Fisk each had three hits and multi-run scored and RBI games in the bludgeoning.
Baltimore 6 at Cleveland 1
-Jim Palmer (19-12, 2.99) and the Orioles hang in there with an easy win over the Indians. If Palmer is to have a chance to win 20 it would be if the Birds can force a one-game playoff with Boston who they trail by 1.5
Detroit 3 at Milwaukee 2 (14)

The Tigers  score two in the 9th and win on Bill Madlock’s triple in the 14th as they move ahead of the Brewers into 5th place in the AL East
Minnesota 8 at Chicago 7 (10)

Larry Milbourne’s 3rd home run of the year was the difference as the Twins score 26 runs in a three game sweep of the White Sox . The teams entered the series tied for last place.  
Kansas City 8 at Texas 9

Bruce Dal Canton (7-5, 4.13) walked Leo Cardenas with the bases loaded to plate the winning run for the Rangers. Paul Splittorff (26-3, 2.63) allowed six runs in five innings for K.C.

AL East: The Red Sox lead the Orioles by 1.5 with three days to go.The Red Sox have a doubleheader with Detroit tomorrow and the Orioles visit the Yankees.
AL West: The Royals are runaway division winners

Montreal 3 at St. Louis 9
-Ken Reitz (.259 9HR) went 4-for-4 with a home run and Bob Gibson (14-7, 4.02) went the distance for the win as the Cardinals clinch a winning season
San Francisco 1 at Los Angeles 2 (11)
-Dusty Baker’s single in the 11th gives L.A. the sweep and the Giants their 8th straight loss
Houston 8 at San Diego 7
-Jerry DaVanon’s single in the 9th was the game winning RBI as the Astros win despite a rare bad outing by Mark Lemongello (20-8, 2.64)

NL East: The Pirates have repeated as division winners
NL West : The Astros have clinched the division
