-Bill Madlock’s RBI single in the 9th was the knockout blow in a game where both teams got off the mat from huge deficits. The Red Sox led 6-1 and 8-2 before the Tigers scored thirteen straight runs. Down 15-8 in the 8th the Red Sox rallied for seven runs in the 8th capped by Bob Watson’s 25th home run of the year. The teams combined for forty hits and six home runs.

-Home runs by Jerry White (6) and Andre Thornton (8) help Steve Rogers (12-12, 3.28) finish at .500. The Mets lose their 100th game.

-Mike Schmidt hits his NL high 40th home run and Jim Lonborg (14-9, 3.50) earns the win that assures the Phils of a .500 season at worst.

-Rookie Bob Knepper (15-2, 2.47) goes eight innings and ensures himself the NL ERA title. Ken Forsch (39Sv, 2.69) may earn NL fireman of the year and Mike Ivie’s 37th home run padded his NL high RBI total. If Ivie wins the MVP it’s conceivable the Astros sweep the NL postseason awards.
