Palmer Pitches O's Into Tie With Red Sox



American League:
Milwaukee 0 at Baltimore 2
-Jim Palmer (18-12, 3.03) comes up with a big three-hit shutout and Bobby Grich goes 4-for-4 as the Orioles avoid  a sweep by the Brewers
Kansas City 3 at California 2
-Ruppert Jones (10HR) homered and Jim Colborn (15-8, 2.74) strikes out seven in seven innings as the Royals rack up win #103
Minnesota 17 at Oakland 4 5
-The Twins rack up twenty-two hits including home runs by Chris Speier(8th) and Steve Brye (5th). Rod Carew had five hits, Speier had five RBI’s and Eric Soderholm had four hits, runs and RBI’s in the pummeling.

AL East: The Orioles tie the rained out Red Sox with a week to go. Boston plays eight games in the final seven days while the Orioles will play six
AL West:  The Royals have clinched the division crown

National League

-The Expos outscore the Mets 24-5 in a three game sweep at Shea. Rookie Dan Briggs had four hits and Frank Taveras (48SB) had three hits and two steals. Tom Seaver (13-11, 3.37) has been roughed up in consecutive outings for the Mets
Philadelphia 4 at Pittsburgh 3

The Phillies rally for two in the 9th as Gene Garber (8-6, 2.24) and Tug McGraw (25Sv, 2.55) combine for three perfect innings for the decision. It’s been a disappointing season in Philly but this series win at rival division champion Pittsburgh is a satisfying way to reach .500.

The Cubs salvage one at Busch Stadium thanks to a six-hit shutout by Larry Gura (10-10, 4.00) and Bruce Sutter (20Sv, 2.91)
Houston 6 at Atlanta 4

The Astros magic number is one as they win their ninth in a row. Mike Ivie (36) and Alan Ashby (7) each hit three run home runs to stake the ‘Stros to a 6-0 lead. Ken Forsch (38Sv, 2.79) stymied a Brave rally for the save

-The Reds have won six of seven but it looks to be too little too late because the Astros keep winning. Dan Driessen (13) and George Foster (30) homered and Joe Morgan swiped his 72nd base

Both teams have 20 hits as the Padres win in extras on consecutive days in L.A.. Steve Garvey had five hits and Dave Rader five RBI’s for the Padres
