-Greg Luzinski (27) and Mike Schmidt (37) both homered as the Phillies romp John Candelaria (14-10, 2.86) and outslug their Keystone state rivals

-Reggie Smith (37) homered and drove in five while Lou Brock (.344 67SB) had two stolen bases and Ted Simmons (.319) scored four times as the Cardinals erase an early 3-0 deficit to steamroll the Cubs
Houston 7 at Atlanta 6
-Davey Lopes (.302 8HR 56 SB) goes six for six including the game winning home run in the top of the 9th and also stole two bases to lead the Astros to their eighth straight win and 100th on the season
San Francisco 7 at Cincinnati 10
-Cesar Geronimo’s (10th) three-run home run in the 8th broke a 7-7 tie as the Reds outmuscle the Giants in Cincy
San Diego 3 at Los Angeles 2 (11)
-The Padres only muster four hits but three of them were solo home runs – Dave Winfield (20th), Jerry Turner’s 1st major league home run and Randy Hundley’s 4th which was the game winner in extras. Andy Messersmith (2.63) pitched ten innings with no decision for the Dodgers.

-The Brewers are relishing the spoiler role this week as they have gone 4-0 in Boston and Baltimore – with two losses to the out of it Yankees sandwiched in between. Ben Oglivie went 5-for-5 with two doubles and Eduardo Rodriguez (9-13, 3.53) struck out eleven in eight innings. Wayne Garland (15-8, 3.05) continues to fade down the stretch for the O’s, he was shelled for six runs in three innings

-Oscar Gamble hits home run #39 and George Hendrick hit the go-ahead single in a four-run 6th as the Indians rally to prevent the Red Sox from expanding their lead. Bill Laxton (3.11) and Harry Parker (16Sv, 5.22) didn’t allow a hit to Boston in the final three innings to preserve the lead
New York 3 at Detroit 1
-Luis Tiant (15-9, 3.00) and Dick Tidrow (37Sv, 2.11) combine on a four hitter and Walt Williams hit his 10th home run of the season

-Jackie Brown (12-12, 4.22) went the distance and Johnny Grubb and Leon Roberts each drove in three as the Rangers roll in Chicago

-RBI singles by Amos Otis and George Brett in the 9th vault the Royals to victory at the Big A. Paul Splittorff (2.55) was cruising toward his 27th win of the season with a 2-0 lead in the 8th but Don Baylor’s (33) three-run home run ended that quest – but the Royals rally to win their 102nd game anyway.

-The A’s improve to 12-2 versus the Twins on the season as they tie the game in the 11th, 12th and win it in the 13th on a Dave McKay single
