Palmer Goes Ten Innings to Preserve Orioles Perch



American League:

Rick Burleson and Jerry Remy had three hits and Fergie Jenkins (15-6, 3.43) went the distance as the Red Sox take two of three in the Bronx
Cleveland 4 at Baltimore  5 (10)
-A thriller at Memorial as Jim Palmer (15-12, 3.22) takes a 2-0 lead in the 9th but gives up a two run home run to Toby Harrah (21) and another two run shot to Oscar Gamble (32) in the 10th – but still earns the win thanks to a three run rally in the bottom of the 10th capped by a Doug DeCinces single.
Milwaukee 4 at Detroit 1
-Danny Thomas (15HR) has homered and Bill Castro (19Sv, 1.89) has earned the save in consecutive wins for the Brewers in Detroit. The Brewers move to within a game of the 5th place Tigers
Chicago 4 at Minnesota 6
-Eric Soderholm hit home run #30 and Steve Brye and Glenn Borgmann each hit their 5th helping Jim Hughes (9-7, 3.47) to the win
Texas 6 at Kansas City 4
-Recent free agent singing LaMar Johnson hit his 1st home run of the season and Darrell Porter added his 10th as the Rangers have won two of three in K.C.
Oakland 0 at California 7
-Dave Goltz (15-5, 3.31) with the four hitter as the A’s have now lost nine straight. Don Baylor, Ron  Jackson and Orlando Ramirez each knocked in two

AL East: The Orioles are clinging to a half game lead on the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals lead by 13.5 games

National League

-Barry Foote hit his 5th home run of the year as the Cubs push Craig Swan (5-18, 4.19) closer to a 20 loss season
Montreal 1 at Philadelphia 4

Steve Carlton (12-10, 2.72) and Gene Garber (4Sv, 2.38) combined to five hit the Expos. Recent trade acquisition Mike Anderson drove in two for the Phils
Pittsburgh 5 at St. Louis 6

Reggie Smith (33) and Ted Simmons (25) homered and Mark Littell retired the final five batters for his 28th save as the Cardinals nip the Pirates who committed four errors.
Los Angeles 6 at Atlanta 5
-Dusty Baker hit his 17th home run and Don Stanhouse (6-6, 3.86) earned the win in relief as the Dodgers win their third in a row
Houston 6 at Cincinnati 3
-Cesar Cedeno rapped a pair of doubles and threw a runner out at home to help Nolan Ryan (18-9, 2.95) and the Astros to a big win in Cincy. Ryan struck out eleven and the Reds fall to 4-7 on a pivotal twelve game homestand.
San Francisco 6 at San Diego 0

Jim Barr (12-10, 3.01), Gary Lavelle (3.63) and Doyle Alexander (4.03) scatter ten hits as the Giants win their third in a row and hand the Padres their first defeat in September.
 
NL East: The Pirates lead the Cardinals by 10 games
NL West: The Astros extend their lead to 5 over the Reds
