Bumbry, Valentine lead Padres Back at Riverfront

-Andre Dawson (.270 7HR) homered and drove in three as the Cubs nip the Expos 6-5. The Cubs had been shutout in three of their past four games
St. Louis 2 at Philadelphia 1

John Curtis (6-5, 4.39) and Mark Littell (27Sv, 2.37) combine to one-hit the Phillies. Lou Brock (.345 52SB) had three hits and a stolen base
New York 1 at Pittsburgh 3

The Pirates score three in the 1st inning and that’s all Bert Blyleven (14-5, 3.06) needed to defeat Tom Seaver (12-8, 3.09) and the Mets
San Francisco 4 at Atlanta 3
-A good day for Giants rookies as Jack Clark’s 5th home run proved to be the game winner and Rob Dressler (3-2, 5.07) pitched seven innings for the win.
San Diego 6 at Cincinnati 3
- Al  Bumbry led off the 6th with his 12th home run to cut the Reds lead to 3-2 and Bobby Valentine 7th was a grand slam later in the frame to open up a 6-3 Padre lead they’d not relinquish. The Reds are now 4-5 on a pivotal twelve game homestand that concludes with two games with the 1st place Astros this week.
Los Angeles 6 at Houston 1
-Andy Messersmith (17-8, 2.65) only allows an unearned run in the 9th as the Dodgers win easily at the Dome.
 
NL East: The Pirates maintain their commanding 11 game lead on the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros lead remains 4 games on the Reds




American League:
Boston 1 at New York 2 (11)

The Yankees move over .500 by winning their 5th in a row, playing spoiler against their arch rivals. Skip Lockwood (6-6, 2.34) walked Rick Dempsey with the bases loaded to plate the winning run
Chicago 6 at Minnesota 7
-Eric Soderholm (29) homered and he, Lyman Bostock, Dan Ford and Larry Hisle had two hits each as the Twins build a 7-0 lead and hold on to end a ten game losing streak. Mike Marshall (9Sv, 4.10) got Tony Muser to ground out with men on the corners to end it
Texas 6 at Kansas City 3
-Johnny Grubb (15) and Leon Roberts (16) homered off K.C. spot starter Bruce Dal Canton (6-4, 4.08) as the Rangers beat the 1st place Royals. Jim Kern earned save #25 for Texas

AL East: The idle Orioles see their lead grow to 1.5 over the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals lead by 14.5 games
