Bochte Wins it in 9th for Tribe



American League:
Detroit 1 at Baltimore 2

The Orioles improve to 14-1 versus the Tigers this season as Mike Torrez (14-10, 3.55) and Rudy May (21Sv, 3.99) combine for eight strikeouts in the win
New York 1  at Cleveland  2
-Bruce Bochte’s (.314) third hit of the day was the game winning single in the bottom of the 9th off Dale Murray (4-6, 2.80)
Boston 10 at Milwaukee 2 (Game 1)
-Jim Rice’s MLB leading 39th home run of the season was a grand slam in the 8th to blow the game open as spot starter Reggie Cleveland (3-6, 2.32) goes the distance for the win. Jerry Remy had four hits for the BoSox
Boston 4 at Milwaukee 0 (Game 2)
- Bob Watson (23) hit a three run home run in the 1st inning and Fergie Jenkins (16-6, 3.29) struck out nine in the six hit shutout as the Red Sox sweep two at County Stadium. Jerry Remy (24SB) had two more hits and two steals. Boston did not use their bullpen today.
Minnesota 3 at Kansas City 2
-Jim Hugues (10-7, 3.34) and Bill Butler (6Sv, 3.99) help the Twins nip the Royals who have slowed down of late
California 4 at Texas 2 (11)
-Rookie Jason Thompson had three hits including his 21st home run and Greg Minton (6-2, 5.47) pitched two shutout innings for the win
Chicago 3 at Oakland 4 (11)
-Joe Rudi and Dave McKay each had three hits and Larry Haney had the game winning hit in the 11th as the A’s prevailed

AL East: The Red Sox up their lead to 1.5 games despite the Orioles winning today
AL West:  The Royals lead by 12 games

National League
Pittsburgh 6 at New York 1

Omar Moreno led off the game with his 9th home run of the season as the Bucs hand Craig Swan his 19th loss of the season. Rick Reuschel (15-10, 2.73) tossed a four hitter
Philadelphia 6  at St. Louis 1
-
Steve Carlton (13-10, 2.65) fanned ten and Mike Schmidt (35 ) and Tony Perez (14) homered as the Phillies won their third straight
Houston 4 at Los Angeles 0
-Rich Rhoden (9-4, 3.69) was masterful ion his spot start and Mike Ivie ripped his 34th home run of the season as the Astros hand Ken Brett (4-5, 6.25) and the Dodgers their fourth straight defeat
Cincinnati 2 at San Diego 1
-1975 MVP Johnny Bench is proving his worth once again. Bench did not start tonight after catching both ends of yesterday’s doubleheader sweep in L.A. but he comes off the bench to win it in the 9th with an RBI single. Clay Carroll (5-1, 2.89) and Will McEnaney (2Sv, 2.17) earned the decisions for the Reds

NL East: The Pirates lead by 12  games
NL West: The Astros lead remains 4 over the Reds
