Winfield's Wallop Leads Padres Past Giants



National League
Montreal 3 at Chicago 7

The Cubs win the final two games to split this four game series with the Expos. Bobby Murcer (17) hit a grand slam and rookie Ken Kravec (3-1, 3.16) pitched eight innings for the win
San Francisco 7 at San Diego 10

Dave Winfield’s 15th home run of the season broke a tie and gave the Padres a 9-6 lead in the 8th as San Diego outslugs the Giants. Rollie Fingers (4-2, 2.74) earns a win on consecutive evenings and the Padres improve to 6-1 since the All Star Break


NL East: The idle Pirates lead the Cardinals by 5. The Cubs have tied the Phillies for 3rd place, both teams trail by 7
NL West:  The Astros lead the Reds by 2.5. The Padres pick up a half game on each and trail by 7


American League:
Milwaukee 6 at Chicago 7
- The White Sox rally from 6-0 down to win 7-6 for the second straight day over the Brewers. The rally culminated with Jorge Orta’s game winning single in the 9th off Fred Holdsworth (3-4, 1.74)
Detroit 4 at Minnesota 5
- Larry Hisle’s 24th home run of the season was a three-run home run in the 5th and was enough for the Twins to sweep a mini two game set with the Tigers
New York 2 at Kansas City 3 (10)
- K.C. racks up win number nine in a row in the 10th inning as Frank White’s RBI single off Sparky Lyle (4-6, 2.89) sends Royals Stadium into a frenzy. Marty Pattin (4-4, 3.91) got the win in relief.
Boston 4 at Texas 2
-Bob Watson hit his 14th home run of the season in the first inning and the Red Sox never looked back as they end a three game skid. Skip Lockwood earned save #27 for the Sox.
Baltimore 8 at California 3
- Baltimore’s Bobby Grich falls a double short of the cycle as Mike Torrez (11-8, 3.64) and the Orioles hand Dave Goltz (14-3, 3.14) a rare defeat.
Cleveland 7 at Oakland 5 (10)
- Oscar Gamble’s 24th home run of the season was a two-run home run in the top of the 10th off A’s newcomer Elias Sosa (3-4, 2.79) as Cleveland ends a ten game slide after blowing a 4-0 first inning lead and 5-4 ninth inning lead

AL East: The Red Sox and Orioles remain tied with the Yankees falling 5.5 back
AL West: The Royals extend their lead over the Angels to 4.5 games
