Reggie Rocks Royals in Opener of Showdown at the Big A



American League:
Detroit 3 at Boston 4
- Bob Watson had three hits and the game winning RBI and Jim Rice hit home run #27 as the Red Sox edge the Tigers. Skip Lockwood struck out the dangerous Bill Madlock to secure his 28th save
New York 4 at Cleveland 5
- Ray Fosse’s single off Sparky Lyle (4-7, 3.02) drove in the winning run for the Indians in the 9th. The Yankees turned five double plays in the defeat.
Baltimore 8 at Milwaukee 4
-Ellie Hendricks (14HR) hit a grand slam and drove in six as the Orioles improve to 9-1 versus the Brewers on the season.
Minnesota 3 at Texas 7
- Leon Roberts hit his 11th home run and drove in four as the Rangers win despite three errors by rookie SS Mark Wagner
Kansas City 3 at California 8
-Reggie Jackson (17HR) hits two home runs as the Angels open a key weekend series with the Royals by roughing up Dennis Leonard (14-7, 3.02) and company. Only two of the Angels runs were earned as the Royals made three errors.
Chicago 5 at Oakland 2
-The A’s struggles continue as Wilbur Wood (1-2, 5.12) returns to the minors and pitches eight strong innings for the victory

AL East: The Red Sox and Orioles remain tied with the Yankees slip to 6.5 bacl
AL West: The Royals lead over the Angels is trimmed to 3.5

National League
Cincinnati 1 at Houston 2

The Astrodome was rocking as Jerry DaVanon tripled and Greg Gross singled him home to win it in the bottom of the 9th. Rookie Joe Sambito (3-1, 1.53) pitched two shutout innings for the win and Rawly Eastwick (2-3, 2.36) took the loss.
Atlanta 4 at Los Angeles 5 (13)

Hank Webb (1-4, 5.56), recently signed by L.A., pitches three shutout innings and scores the winning run for the Dodgers.
San Francisco 11 at San Diego 0
-Every Giant player scores a run except Vida Blue (8-7, 3.59). Blue did his part In the shellacking by tossing a six hit shutout. Glenn Adams (8HR) homered and had four RBI’s
