Splittorff Wins 20th in 26th Start for Red-Hot Royals



American League:
Milwaukee 6 at Chicago 7 (10)
- Don Money’s 8th home run of the season was a pinch-hit three run home run in the 8th to tie it for the Brewers but the White Sox would prevail in the 10th on a Tim Johnson error. Ralph Garr and Jorge Orta had four hits each for Chicago while rookie Jim Gantner had four for the Brewers.
Detroit 4 at Minnesota 7
- Rookie Mark Fidrych (3.86) carried a shutout into the 8th but the Twins erupted for seven runs to take the game away from Detroit. Lyman Bostock had two hits, a run and two RBI’s in the inning
New York 2 at Kansas City 10
- The Royals win their eighth straight and Hal McRae went 4-for-4 with 6 RBI’s but the story here is Paul Splittorff who wins his 20th game on August 4th (20-3, 2.43)
Boston 0 at Texas 1
-Stan Perzanowski (15-2, 1.99) pitches a three-hit shutout. Fergie Jenkins (3.38) pitched seven shutout innings for the Red Sox but Richie Zisk would hit his 19th home run of the season in the 8th off former Ranger Reggie Cleveland (1-5, 2.37)
Baltimore 5 at California 6
- Rookie Andres Mora tied the game in the top of the 9th with a two-out two run double off Wayne Simpson (5-7, 5.42) but the Angels would win it in the bottom half on Bill Melton’s single off loser Rudy May (5-6, 3.58)
Cleveland 4 at Oakland 8
- Claudell Washington drove in three, Tommy Sandt hit his first career home run and Don Sutton (13-6, 2.57) gutted out a complete game despite allowing fifteen baserunners as the A’s hand the Tribe their 10th straight defeat

AL East: All losers. The Red Sox and Orioles are tied with the Yankees trailing by 4.5
AL West: Both teams win again as the Royals maintain a 3.5 game lead over the Angels

National League
Montreal 6 at Chicago 7

The Cubs jump out to an early 7-1 lead and hang on as Tom Dettore (1Sv, 4.60) gets John Milner to ground into a double play with the bases loaded to end it.
St. Louis 6 at Philadelphia 4
- The Cardinals take two of three in a pivotal series at the Vet. Reggie Smith smashed home run #26 and Eric Rasmussen improves to 10-7, 3.06). Steve Carlton (9-9, 2.77) was charged with all six runs in five innings of work for the Phillies
New York 1 at Pittsburgh 13
-Willie Stargell (22HR) hit a grand slam and Dave May (21HR) hit his fourth home run in six games since being acquired from Atlanta as the Pirates destroy Bob Myrick (4-6, 5.05) and the Mets at Three Rivers
Houston 5 at Atlanta 0
- Rookie phenom Mark Lemongello (16-5, 2.25) tosses a three hitter and Jerry DaVanon (4) and Art Howe (5) hit home runs as the Astros complete an easy three game sweep in Atlanta.
Los Angeles 2 at San Diego 3

San Diego’s Steve Garvey drove in the winning run in the 9th with a single off Al Downing (3-4, 3.76) as Danny Frisella (2.85) and Rollie Fingers (3-2, 2.58) combine for three perfect innings of relief to lead the Padres to victory
Cincinnati 4 at San Francisco 3
-Joe Morgan’s two out home run of the 9th was his 15th of the season and broke a 3-3 deadlock as the Reds get a big win to stay close to division leading Houston before heading there this weekend for three big games. Newcomer Will McEnaney (5-3, 3.75) pitched two shutout innings and earned the win and Rawly Eastwick racked up save number 33
NL East: The Pirates lead remains 5 over the Cardinals with the Phillies falling 7 behind
NL West:  The Astros maintain their lead of 2.5 over the Reds and 7.5 over the Padres.
