Tigers Rally as Collins Continues to Roll in Chicago

American League:
Detroit 9 at Chicago 5 (12)
-The Tigers stay in the Windy City as we return to league play and the White Sox continue to blow leads. Yesterday was a 6-2 lead in the 8th at Cincinnati, today it was a 5-0 lead going into the 7th. AL Player of the Week Dave Collins (.350 as a Tiger) picked up where he left off as well with four hits including a three-run home run in the 12th.
Milwaukee 5 at Minnesota 4
- A typical Twins result as one of their big hitters sees their big day go in vain. Dan Ford (.341 18HR) went 4-for-4 with two home runs but a pair of Danny Thomas RBI doubles lifts the Brewers to the win.
Boston 2 at Kansas City 3
-The Red Sox are the defending champions but the team of note in this battle of 1st place teams is the Royals who’ve now won six in a row and are 6-0 on the season versus Boston. Rookie Ruppert Jones had three hits, his 9th steal and the game winning RBI and Steve Busby improved to 10-6, 3.76
New York 0 at Texas 9
-It’s been a struggle for Jackie Brown (6-10, 4.29) but not today as he tosses a three hit shutout versus the Yankees. Richie Zisk (18) and Leon Roberts  (9) went deep for the Rangers
Cleveland 9 at California 12
-The City of Angels has not been heavenly for the Tribe as they drop their 8th in a row after also being swept by the Dodgers on the weekend. Good day for the Jacksons as Ron  (.271 9HR) had his second two-home run game in three days and Reggie ripped his 15th
Baltimore 5 at Oakland 3
-The Orioles erupt for five runs in the 7th including a three-run double by Tommy Harper as they send the reeling A’s to their fourth straight defeat. Rudy May (13Sv, 3.49) pitched three shutout innings for the save.

AL East: The.Orioles tie the Red Sox for 1st place again with the Yankees 5.5 games out
AL West: The Royals maintain a 3.5 game lead over the Angels

National League
Montreal 5 at Chicago 4
-
The Expos had an eight game winning streak heading into the All-Star Break and proceeded to make three significant deals largely motivated for the future. They were promptly blown out in three straight losses to the Royals. Today they get back to their winning ways as they rally for three in the 9th – the key his being a two-run single by newcomer Mike Vail.
St. Louis 8 at Philadelphia 7
-The Cardinals rally to win a see-saw match of teams chasing the Pirates in the NL East. Reggie Smith (25HR, .262) hit his second home run of the game to tie in the 9th off All-Star Tug McGraw and the Cards would win it in the 10th when Keith Hernandez singled off Phils’ newcomer Bill Campbell (2-6, 3.29). Reggie Smith has been a force since being acquired from the Giants in May and had six RBI’s today
New York 4 at Pittsburgh 6
-Jim Fregosi (3HR) hit a pinch-hit three run home run in the 7th to vault the Pirates to victory. Sam McDowell improved to a perfect  8-0, 3.22 In relief and Dave Roberts (3.64) earned his first save for the Pirates. He was moved to the thin Pirates bullpen with the acquisition of John Candelaria
Houston 6 at Atlanta 1
-The Astros lead the league in scoring despite playing in the Astrodome so you know they’ll be dangerous when they visit Atlanta. Davey Lopes remained hot with his 7th home run of the season and a resurgent Joe NIekro (7-3, 3.39) tossed a four-hitter
Los Angeles 1 at San Diego 9
-
The Padres skidded into the All-Star Break but are showing they may not fade away in the NL West race. They win their 4th straight easily here as Tito Fuentes drove in three and Steve Swisher had four hits including his 3rd home run. Doug Rau falls to 5-14, 4.22 for L.A.
Cincinnati 4 at San Francisco 3
-Cesar Geronimo (9) hit a three-run home run in the 7th to break a scoreless tie and Rich Hinton (8-2, 2.80) struck out ten in seven shutout innings as the Reds would hang on to win at the Stick. Derrel Thomas (3HR) hit a two-out three run home run off Rawly Eastwick in the 9th to make it close.

NL East: The Pirates lead remains 5 over the Cardinals with the Phillies (7) and Cubs (7.5) slipping dangerously close to out of contention
NL West:  The Astros remains 1.5 over the Reds and 6.5 over the Padres.
