-Bob Watson hit his 13th home run of the season and rookie Rick Krueger improved to 7-5, 3.31 as the Sox take two of the three at Shea

- Two home runs by Roy White (10) and a three inning save by Dick Tidrow (25Sv) help the Yankees to avoid the sweep at the Vet
Minnesota 1 at Pittsburgh 2 (11)
-AL RBI leader Eric Soderholm ripped his 25th home run of the season to lead off the 9th and spoil John Candelaria’s bid at a shutout – and a win – in his Pirate debut. Pittsburgh would prevail in the 11th however when Mike Bacsik hit Rennie Stennett with a pitch with the bases loaded.

-Lynn McGlothen (6-4, 2.80) pitches a five-hit complete game victory and does not allow an earned run in his Cardinals debut ending a four game slide for St. Louis
Detroit 4 at Atlanta 5
-The Braves rally for three runs in the bottom of the 9th to avoid the sweep versus the last place Tigers. Ken Henderson had three hits including the game winning single.
Chicago WSox 6 at Cincinnati 7
- Buddy Bell’s (3) pinch hit home run ignited a five-run Cincinnati rally in the 8th as the Reds rally from 6-2 down to upend the ChiSox
California 3 at Houston 5
-Mike Ivie hit his 26th home run and Davey Lopes went 4-for-4 and swiped his 32nd base as the Astros avoid the sweep versus the Angels. Ken Forsch recorded the final five outs and now has 25 saves in 26 opportunities.
Cleveland 3 at Los Angeles 6
-Burt Hooton (8-11, 3.90) carried a one-hitter into the 9th but back to back two out home runs by John Lowenstein (10) and Bruce Bochte (4) prevented him from the complete game. They could not however prevent the Indians from losing their seventh straight
Oakland 2 at San Diego 8
-The Padres throttle the sinking A’s in a three-game sweep at San Diego. Mike Hargrove scored twice and drove in two to the lead the way offensively and Joe McIntosh improved to 11-5, 3.24
Baltimore 2 at San Francisco 3
-Pedro Borbon (3Sv, 4.44) recorded his first save as a Giant and Vida Blue evened his mark at 7-7, 3.79 as the last place Giants win their series with the contending Orioles
AL East: The Red Sox regain sole possession of 1st place. The Orioles (1gb) and Yankees (5.5gb) trail.
AL West: The Royals extend their lead over the Angels to 3.5
NL East: The Pirates lead remains 5 over the Cardinals with the Phillies (6) and Cubs (6.5) not far behind
NL West: The Astros remains 1.5 over the Reds and 6.5 over the Padres.
ALvsNL: The NL needed four wins today and they got nine. The NL wins interleague 78-66 therefore earning home-field advantage in the World Series as they did in 1976.. Last year the Red Sox won the World Series in the 6th game at Cincinnati.
