Hartzell Does it All in Twins Triumph Over Brewers



American League:
Detroit 7 at Chicago 3
- The Tigers get to White Sox ace Jerry Koosman (14-5, 3.06) as Bill Freehan, Larry Herndon and Alex Johnson each drove in two runs. Vern Ruhle (6-8, 3.99) earned the win for Detroit
Milwaukee 0 at Minnesota 2
- A one man show as Paul Hartzell (8-7, 3.94) tosses a five-hit shutout and drives in both runs for the Twins.
Boston 3 at Kansas City 4
- The Royals break a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the 8th with two runs sparked by a Steve Dillard error as K.C. improves to 7-0 this season versus the champs and have won seven in a row overall.
New York 7 at Texas 3
- Home runs by Ken Griffey (9) and Graig Nettles (18) help the Yankees build a 6-0 lead as they split their two game set in Arlington
Cleveland 3 at California 12
- The Angels plate a dozen in both wins over the Indians who’ve now lost nine in a row. Red hot rookie Ron Jackson’s 10th home run of the year keyed a six run Angel 5th that chased Phil Niekro (7-10, 2.95) from the game
Baltimore 2 at Oakland 6
- Joe Rudi (19HR) hit a pair of home runs and drove in four as the A’s win for just the 7th time in 24 games. They haven’t won two in a row since July 4-5

AL East: The.Orioles and Red Sox remain tied. The Yankees pick up a game and are 4.5 back
AL West: The Royals maintain a 3.5 game lead over the Angels

National League
Montreal 7 at Chicago 3

Bill Lee (12-9, 2.37) tosses a complete game on three day’s rest and newcomer Al Oliver drove in three for the Expos
St. Louis 3 at Philadelphia 4
- The Cardinals recalled Larry Dierker (1-12, 4.71) from the minors to make tonight’s start and he’d pitch five shutout innings but would not survive the 6th as the Phillies erase a 3-0 deficit with a four-run rally keyed by Orlando Gonzalez’s first major league home run. Another struggling hurler John Denny (6-10, 4.60) got credit for the win for Philly in his first appearance since July 15th
New York 6 at Pittsburgh 3
-Leo Foster (5) and Jesus Alou (1) homered and Paul Siebert pitched three shutout innings for his first save as the last place Mets knock off division leading Pittsburgh
Houston 8 at Atlanta 3
- Nolan Ryan (12-9, 3.52) struck out eight and five Astro batters had two hits including Jose Cruz who scored three runs and Ken Boswell who drove in three
Los Angeles 7 at San Diego 5 (10)

The Dodgers prevail in a see-saw battle thanks to Lee Lacy’s 7th home run of the season in extra innings. The Padres had tied it in the 9th on an Al Bumbry double
Cincinnati 1 at San Francisco 5
-Previously struggling rookie Rob Dressler (1-0, 4.88) stuns the Reds with a masterful complete game victory while veteran Willie McCovey ripped his 16th home run of the season for the Giants
NL East: The Pirates lead remains 5 over the Cardinals with the Phillies creeping to 6 games behind
NL West:  The Astros extend their lead to 2.5 over the Reds and 7.5 over the Padres.
