Three Home Runs for Tribe's Thomas in Doubleheader



American League:
Kansas City 6 at Boston 7 (10)
- Jim Rice’s MLB best 35th home run of the season was the walk-off winner as the Red Sox finally defeat the Royals for the first time in eight tries. Jerry Remy also had four hits for the Sox
Texas 3 at New York 5
-Rookie Jerry Mumphery lashed a two run single in the 8th off Jim Kern (3-4, 2.16) to provide the difference for the pinstripes       
Oakland 3 at Baltimore 2
-Cliff Johnson had two doubles and two RBI’s and Dick Bosman (11-11, 3.31) struck out seven in seven innings as the A’s win the opener at Memorial Stadium
California 9 at Cleveland 6 (game 1)

Rookie Bobby Jones hit his 8th home run of the season and drove in five as the Angels outslug the Indians. George Hendrick had a pair of doubles and Gorman Thomas hit his 32nd home run in a losing cause for the Indians … which is noteworthy because…
California 7 at Cleveland 10 (game 2)
-Gorman Thomas (34HR) and George Hendrick (10th) each hit two home runs as it was the Indians turn to outslug the Angels. Hendrick hit a three-run home run in the 9th to win the game
Chicago 1 at Detroit 4 (game 1)
-Steve Stone (2-13, 5.08) returned from the minors only to lose again as Chuck Scrivener (4HR) stunned the Sox with a  pair of home runs in the win
Chicago 1 at Detroit 8 (game 2)

Ron LeFlore drove in three runs and Mark Fidrych (5-9, 3.75) struck out seven in the complete game victory for the Tigers.
Minnesota 5 at Milwaukee 9 (game 1)

Jim Gantner had four hits including the game winning RBI as the Brewers take the opener of what will be a five game series with the Twins due to early season rain outs
Minnesota 4 at Milwaukee 3 (game 2)
-Each team only had four hits but made the most of them thanks to home runs by the Twins Chris Speier (6) and the Brewers Danny Thomas (9) and Cecil Cooper 10).
AL East: The Orioles lead is trimmed down to 2 by the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals lead the Angels by 9 games

National League
Cincinnati 15 at Chicago 4
-Joe Morgan, Dave Concepcion and Johnny Bench each drove in five runs as the Reds romp the Cubs. Morgan (20) and Bench (31) each hit a pair of home runs  - duplicating the feat teammates of the cross-state Indians pulled off tonight
Atlanta 3 at Pittsburgh 10
-Omar Moreno (8HR, 19SB) homered and stole two bases and John Candelaria (11-7, 2.64) remained perfect since being acquired from the Expos as the Pirates roll again
Houston 5 at St. Louis 7
-Cesar Cedeno hits for the cycle at his former team – and the Astros still lose. J.R. Richard (7-10, 5.03) made a spot start for Houston and this could be the last one of the season for the 1975 Cy Young winner. Mark Littell struck out two in the 9th for his 23rd save
Philadelphia 3 at Los Angeles 1
-Nino Espinosa (5-5, 3.02) and Tug McGraw (22Sv, 2.00) combined to five hit the Dodgers.
Montreal 2 at San Diego 3
- Danny Frisella (7-5, 2.59) pitched two innings of perfect relief to earn the win. Rusty Staub (20) and Andre Thornton (6) homered in a losing cause for the Expos who’ve now dropped six straight
New York 4 at San Francisco 5 (11)
-Willie McCovey’s 20th home run of the season was the game winner in the 11th as the Giants halt the Mets season long five game winning streak. McCovey’s was the third game winning home run of the day

NL East: The Pirates maintain a commanding 9 game lead on the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros lead is down to 3 games over the Reds
