Montreal 3 at New York 7
-The Mets have now won five in a row as Ed Kranepool drives in three and Craig Swan (5-14, 3.79) gets a much needed victory. Bill Lee (15-10, 2.64) didn’t make it out of the 4th for Montreal
Philadelphia 2 at Pittsburgh 3 (14)
-The Pirates win in extras for the second straight night over the Phillies. Gene Tenace scored the tying run in the 7th and drove in the winning run with a single in the 14th. Five Pirate relievers shut the Phillies out for the final six innings
Chicago 9 at St. Louis 7
-Adrian Garrett smacked home run #18 and Bruce Sutter notched his 16th save as the Cubs move to within a half game of 2nd place St. Louis. Sutter has yet to allow an inherited runner to score this year in 19 opportunities. Fellow rookie Bruce Kimm stole four bases to raise his total to 17 - very impressive for a catcher.
Atlanta 3 at Cincinnati 13
-The Reds pound the Braves again as Joe Morgan (18HR, 56SB) homered and stole two bases. Five Reds had multi hit games in this one.
San Diego 6 at Houston 4
- Steve Garvey (13HR) hit two home runs and drove in four helping Randy Jones (16-3, 3.25) to victory. The Padres end a six game losing streak with the win
San Francisco 6 at Los Angeles 8
-Dusty Baker (15) and Rick Monday (17) hit three run home runs off Giants rookie Rob Dressler (1-2, 4.84) as L.A. continues to play good baseball in the 2nd half. Ken Brett (4-2, 7.05) has had a terrible year but gets the win tonight.
NL East: The Pirates are running away with it now as they lead the Cardinals by 9.5
NL West: The Astros lead is cut to 4.5 by the Reds

- A throwing error by Jerry Remy in the bottom of the 8th extended the inning and Dave Duncan (3HR) followed with a three-run home run to give the O’s a 7-3 lead. Jim Rice (34HR) had cut the lead to 4-3 in the top half with a three-run shot of his own. Carlton Fisk would hit his 10th in the 9th but it was too late by then for the BoSox
New York 4 at Detroit 2
-Graig Nettles hit his 20th home run and Dick Tidrow racks up save #27 as the Yankees end a six game losing streak
Cleveland 3 at Milwaukee 1
-Paul Reuschel (2-1, 4.84) wins in a spot start for the Tribe thanks in part to home runs by Toby Harrah (17) and Oscar Gamble (26)
California 3 at Chicago 14
-The White Sox pound Frank Tanana (14-8, 3.53) for seven runs, chasing him from the game in the midst of a nine-run 3rd inning. The score was 14-3 after three innings. Bobby Bonds and Jorge Orta each had four hit games for the Sox
Kansas City 4 at Minnesota 2
-The Twins at least are competitive in this one after being outscored 24-0 in the first two games of the series. Amos Otis (32SB) scored two runs and stole two bases and Jim Colborn improved to 10-6, 2.63 for the 1st place Royals
Oakland 4 at Texas 10
-Stan Perzanowski (17-2, 2.27) improved on his astounding record and Roy Howell hit his 3rd home run and drove in three as the Rangers maul the A’s to avoid a sweep
