-Dave Parker’s 18th home run of the season was the two-run walk-off shot in the 11th off Doug Bird (2-5, 5.83).
Chicago 4 at St. Louis 2
-Bruce Kimm drives in two and Bruce Sutter (15Sv, 3.16) fanned two Cardinals in the 9th while earning the save. Geoff Zahn (10-7, 4.17) earned the win for the Cubs.
Atlanta 4 at Cincinnati 9
-The Reds were down 4-0 early but score the final nine runs including seven off Braves starter Buzz Capra (8-14, 4.22). Dave Concepcion had three hits including his 7th home run of the season
San Diego 2 at Houston 9
- Davey Lopes sets a record here with five stolen bases to give him 38 on the season. Lopes stole 3rd with a 9-2 lead in the 8th much to the ire of the Padres dugout. San Diego has lost six in a row.
San Francisco 1 at Los Angeles 7
-Bill Buckner (6) and Jay Johnston (9) homered and recently signed Hank Webb pitched four innings of relief for his first save as the Dodgers win easily
NL East: The Pirates now hold a commanding 8.5 game lead on the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros maintain a 5.5 game lead on the Reds
American League:
Boston 6 at Baltimore 1
- Jim Rice (33) and Bob Watson (19) hit back to back home runs in the 3rd inning and the Red Sox would not look back in the opener of this AL East showdown. The Orioles seven game winning streak was ended.
New York 1 at Detroit 13
-Chuck Scrivener (2nd) and Pitcher Jim Crawford (2nd) hit back to back home runs off Catfish Hunter (8-10, 3.91) in the 2nd – this is how it’s bad it’s become for New York. Sparky Lyle (3.96) gave up five runs in relief. He’s been awful since being acquired from the Rangers
Cleveland 5 at Milwaukee 4 (10)
-Ray Fosse’s 8th home run of the year was the game winner off Bill Castro (4-3, 1.43). Gorman Thomas also hit his 31st for the Tribe to stay two back of Jim Rice for the MLB HR lead.
California 2 at Chicago 3
-The White Sox only muster three hits but it was enough thanks ot the wildness of the Angels staff. Two of the hits were by Jorge Orta who also scored the winning run in the 9th when he beat the throw home on a Rusty Torres grounder
Kansas City 14 at Minnesota 0
-Is this the Chiefs versus the Vikings? The Royals follow up a 10-0 win with a 14-0 thumping of the Twins at the Met. Paul Splittorff (22-3, 2.26) didn’t allow a walk I the shutout. Hal McRae had four hits and Al Cowens four RBI’s
Oakland 8 at Texas 0
-Don Sutton (15-6, 2.82) bounces back from his worst outing of the season with a shutout and Jackie Brown (8-11, 4.18) reverses his recent hot trend by getting bounced from the game in the 5th. Gary Thomasson (13), Joe Rudi (21) and Cliff Johnson (20) all went deep for the A’s
