Soderholm's Shot Helps Twins To First Win Over A's in Eleven Tries

American League:
Milwaukee 2 at New York 3
-The Yankees nearly shut out the Brewers on consecutive evenings as Tom Underwood (11-9, 3.22) took a shutout in the 9th. Dick Tidrow came on to earn his 26th save.
Detroit 3 at Baltimore 7
-The Orioles continue their dominance over the Tigers as they chase Mark Fidrych (4-9, 3.87) from the game in the 5th. Mike Torrez (12-8, 3.61) went the distance for the Orioles.
Boston 4 at Cleveland 5
-
Jim Rice had tied Gorman Thomas for the AL home run lead with his 29th in this one, but Thomas took the lead back with his 30th in the 8th and that would be the difference as the Indians send the Red Sox to 2nd place.
Chicago 1 at Kansas City 6
-Jim Colborn (9-6, 2.58) didn’t allow an earned run in the complete game win as the Royals score six runs in three innings off Jim Kaat (4-8, 4.02) to win easily.
Texas 7 at California 6 (10)
-Darrell Porter led off the 10th with a triple off Greg Minton (4-2, 2.91) and he’d score on a Johnny Grubb sacrifice fly for the decisive run. The Rangers rallied from 6-4 down in the 9th as the bullpen continues to be the weak link for the Halos.
Minnesota 6 at Oakland 1
-The eleventh time is the charm as the Twins finally win one versus the A’s. Jim Hughes (6-6, 3.33)  pitched a complete game and Eric Soderholm smacked his 26th home run of the season
AL East: The Orioles vault a half game ahead of the Red Sox. The Yankees trail by 6.5
AL West: The Royals extend their lead over the Angels to 4

National League
Philadelphia 7 at Montreal 8 (16)
-Larry Lintz went 4-for-4 with three walks and a sacrifice bunt to bat safely in all eight appearances as the Expos deal the Phillies a difficult defeat. The Phillies rallied from 6-2 down to tie the game and would take the lead in the top of the 16th. The Expos would snatch the game back however on Rusty Staub’s game winning double that scored Lintz and Jerry White. Expos ace Bill Lee (14-9, 2.58) earned the win in an emergency relief role.
Chicago 4 at New York 0
-Rookie Ken Kravec (4-1, 2.54) tosses a five hit shutout and strikes out seven as the Cubs down the Mets at Shea
Pittsburgh 2 at St. Louis 8
-The Cardinals erupt for six runs in the 6th to erase a 2-0 deficit and even this critical four game set with the Bucs. Reggie Smith’s three-run triple was the key blow.
San Diego 10 at Cincinnati 3
-Mike Hargrove (2HR) hit a three run home run in the 1st off Pat Darcy (4-5, 3.91) and the Padres would pour it on from there with an easy win at Cincinnati. The Reds did have fifteen hits but left thirteen on base
Houston 1 at Los Angeles 3
-Phil Garner’s 7th home run of the season was a three run jack off Bob Knepper (6-2, 2.72) in the 7th and was the difference. Cesar Cedeno led off the game with his 10th home run bu the Astros would only muster two more hits off Jerry Reuss (9-5, 3.77), Mike Garman (2.70) and Al Downing (5Sv, 3.76)
Atlanta 3 at San Francisco 1
-Rowland Office (5SB) had two steals and the game winning RBI as the Braves win another low scoring game at the Stick. Dick Ruthven (8-10, 3.71) and Frank LaCorte (4Sv, 3.47) kept the Giants in check.
NL East: The Pirates lead over the Cardinals is trimmed to 5
NL West:  The Astros remain 3.5 games up on the Reds.
