Padres Prevail as Hargrove Hammers Reds Again



National League
Philadelphia 3 at Montreal 7
-Larry Parrish had two doubles and four RBI’s as the Expos win again versus the fading Phillies
Chicago 1  at New York 5
-Pat Zachry (6-2, 2.99) got the win and Bob Apodaca (9Sv, 2.48) pitched three shutout innings for the save as the Mets down the Cubs
Pittsburgh 5 at St. Louis 3
-Rookie Omar Moreno drove in the go-ahead run in the 9th off Mark Littell (8-6, 2.15) and the Pirates would add one more for a big win in St. Louis. Lou Brock (40SB) had three steals in the losing effort.
San Diego 8 at Cincinnati 3
-Mike Hargrove drives in four for the second straight game as his two-run single keyed a five-run Padre outburst in the 8th and was the game winning RBI. Jack Billingham (3.88) took a 3-0 lead into the 8th but he and the bullpen could not hold it
Houston 2 at Los Angeles 1
-Joe NIekro (8-3, 3.07) outduels Burt Hooton (8-12, 3.72) as the Astros nip the Dodgers in L.A. Niekro is 6-0, 1.08 in eight starts since returning to the Astro’ rotation.
Atlanta 2 at San Francisco 1
- It was only his 4th of the season but Jeff Burroughs two-run home run was enough for the Braves to win tonight. The Braves sweep the Giants by scores of 2-1, 3-1 and 2-1. John Montefusco (9-11, 3.34) and Max Leon (17Sv, 2.38) combined to strike out ten.

NL East: The Pirates extend their lead over the Cardinals to 6
NL West:  The Astros extend their lead to 4.5 games on the Reds.

American League:
Milwaukee 4 at New York 3
-Billy Champion (6-11, 4.43) earned the win and drove in two runs as the Brewers nip the Yankees. Sparky Lyle (4-8, 3.15) took the loss in relief as he continues to struggle since being acquired from Texas.
Detroit 1 at Baltimore 2
-Steve Luebber (3.43) and Rudy May (6-6, 3.51) two hit Detroit as the Orioles win on Dave Duncan’s 9th inning single. The Orioles are now 13-1 versus the Tigers on the season.
Boston 7 at Cleveland 6
-
Jim Rice (30) and Carl Yastrzemski (9) both homer in consecutive games and Skip Lockwood notched his 30th save for the Red Sox. Rice’s shot broke a 6-6 tie in the 7th
Chicago 2 at Kansas City 3
-George Brett didn’t start but he’d finish it as his 12th home run of the season was a pinch-hit blast in the 8th to break the 2-2 tie. Dennis Leonard (15-7, 2.98) and Ken Sanders (4Sv, 2.98) earned the decisions for K.C.
Texas 10 at California 7
-Richie Zisk’s RBI single in a four-run Ranger 7th proved to be the game winner as Texas survives five RBI’s by Don Baylor to play spoiler again in Anaheim
Minnesota 3 at Oakland 2
-The Twins have won two straight over the A’s after losing the first ten meetings between the clubs. Larry Hisle had three hits and Vic Albury (5-6, 4.22) earned the win

AL East: The Orioles maintain a half game lead on the Red Sox
AL West: The Royals extend their lead over the Angels again and now lead by 5
