Mets' Matlack Fans Fifteen Cubs



National League
Philadelphia 3 at Montreal 0
-Rookie Nino Espinosa (4-4, 3.12) allowed only three hits and walked none in his first career shutout. John D’Acquisto (0-2, 4.50) started for the Expos a day after being signed as a free agent. He was released by the A’s earlier this season
Chicago 0 at New York 2
-Jon Matlack (5-14, 3.71) strikes out an impressive fifteen Cubs in eight innings and Jerry Martin’s 4th home run of the season provided all the offence for the Mets.
Pittsburgh 3 at St. Louis 2
-Four Cardinal errors gives the Pirates the win in this crucial opener. The Cards loaded the bases with nobody out in the 9th against Kent Tekulve (20Sv, 2.45) but the Pirate closer bared down and only allowed one run to cross
San Diego 0 at Cincinnati 7
-George Foster (22HR) slammed a pair of home runs and Bill Bonham (11-8, 3.29) spun a three-hit gem as the Reds win easily.
Houston 8 at Los Angeles 5
-Mike Ivie hit his 27th home run and added to his NL lead with four RBI’s as the Astros outmuscle the Dodgers in L.A. Mark Lemongello (17-5, 2.39) and Ken Forsch (27Sv, 2.51) added to their impressive totals in the win as well
Atlanta 2 at San Francisco 1
-Ray Sadecki (6-11, 5.33) and Max Leon (16Sv, 2.44) outduel Ed Halicki (6-12, 3.01) at Candlestick.


NL East: The Pirates extend their lead over the Cardinals to 6
NL West:  The Astros maintain a 3.5 game lead over the Reds.


American League:
Milwaukee 0 at New York 1
-Bill Travers (2-10, 4.75) starts for the first time in over a month and combines with Jerry Augustine on a three hitter, but three hits were enough for the Yankees on the strength of a Luis Tian (11-6, 2.62) shutout
Detroit 4 at Baltimore 10
-Eight Orioles drove in runs as they keep beating up on the weak sisters of the AL East. Baltimore is now 21-3 versus the Tigers and Brewers
Boston 7 at Cleveland 4
-
Jim Rice (28) and Bob Watson (15) each homered as the Red Sox build a 6-0 lead and go on to down the sinking Tribe. Fergie Jenkis (13-4, 3.43) and Skip Lockwood (29Sv, 2.49) added to their stat lines in the win.
Texas 3 at California 4
-The Angels continue to be lead by their rookies, this time it was Bobby Jones (5HR) with a pinch hit two-run go ahead home run in the 7th inning and Gary Ross (3-1, 4.30) with the win in a spot start.
Minnesota 4 at Oakland 7
-The A’s are now 10-0 versus the Twins this season ad Ted Kubiak had four hits, Gary Thomasson hit his 12th home run and Don Sutton raised his mark to 14-6, 2.69 despite not surviving a four-run Minnnesota 6th

AL East: The Red Sox maintain a half game lead on the Orioles
AL West: The idle Royals see their lead trimmed to 3 by the Angels
