Ruhle One-Hits Tribe in Motown



American League:
Milwaukee 7 at Boston 6 (10)
- Former Red Sox 1B Cecil Cooper (7HR) comes back to haunt them with an extra-inning home run off Skip Lockwood (4-4, 2.50) to win the game. Frank Duffy had stunned the Brewers with a game-tying pinch hit three-run home run in the 8th – his first of the season. Bill Castro (4-2, 1.26) pitched two shutout innings for the win after saving last night’s game
Baltimore 4 at New York 2 (11)
-Jim Northrup’s 6th home run of the season was a two run jack in the 11th off Sparky Lyle (4-9, 3.38) who continues to struggle in pinstripes. Jim Palmer (13-9, 3.19) pitched ten innings for the win
Cleveland 0 at Detroit 7
-Duane Kuiper’s 6th inning single was the Indians only hit as Vern Ruhle (7-9, 3.99) tosses a one-hit shutout
Texas 4 at Chicago 2
-The road warrior Rangers win their fifth straight as Leon Roberts hits his 13th home run and Jim Kern saves his 22nd game.
California 3 at Minnesota 4 (10)
-Rod Carew’s 10th inning single hands the Angels their 5th straight defeat. Mike Bacsik (6-4, 4.64) earns the win in relief
Oakland 6 at Kansas City 7 (10)
-Amos Otis raced home on Bob Stinson’s bases loaded grounder in the 19th as the Royals win despite blowing an early 6-2 lead.
AL East: Extra innings were kind to the Orioles who extend their lead over the Red Sox to 2.5 games.
AL West:  Extras also were kind to the Royals who extend their lead to 7 games over the Angels

National League
Pittsburgh 1 at Chicago 3
-Dennis Eckersley (10-12, 3.43) and Bruce Sutter (14Sv, 3.22) shut down the Lumber Company at Wrigley. Adrian Garrett hit home run #17 for Chicago
St. Louis 5 at Montreal 2
-Lou Brock (.330 41SB) and Bake McBride (.345 24SB) each had three hits and a stolen base and Reggie Smith hit home run #28 as the Cardinals snap a three-game skid
New York 3 at Philadelphia 2
-Bud Harrelson’s 1st home run of the season scored the winning run in the 7th. Jon Matlack (6-14, 3.62) struck out eleven in the complete game. He’s struck out 25 batters in 17 innings this week.
San Diego 6 at Atlanta 7 (Game 1)
-Charlie Spikes hit his 13th home run of the season and Chris Chambliss had three hits as the Braves win another slugfest with the Padres.
San Diego 4 at Atlanta 8 (game 2)
-Marty Perez (.336 6HR) had two runs, two hits and two RBI’s as well as a home run to lead the Braves to a doubleheader sweep that cripples the Padres pennant hopes. Pete Varney and Darrel Chaney also had a pair of RBI’s and Dick Ruthven improves to 9-10, 3.66
Los Angeles 3 at Cincinnati 5

Joe Morgan’s 17th home run of the season was the second of the game and broke a 3-3 tie in the 8th as the Reds end a four game losing streak. Bill Bonham (12-8, 3.29) earns the win while Doug Rau (5-16, 4.40) suffers another loss and is danger of losing 20 on the season.
San Francisco 1 at Houston 0
-Ed Halicki (7-12, 2.87) spins a six-hit shutout as the last place Giants improve to 7-5 on the season versus the first place Astros – and will attempt a surprising sweep tomorrow at the Astrodome.

NL East: The Pirates lead is reduced to 7 by the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros see their lead trimmed back to 4 by the Reds. The Padres lose a half game and trail by 7.
