Candy-Man Satisfying Pirate Fans' Sweettooth

National League
Pittsburgh 5  at Chicago 0
-The big trade with the Expos is looking good for the Pirates as John Candelaria (10-7, 2.61) strikes out eight in a two-hit shutout and Al Oliver’s replacement in CF, Omar Moreno, hit his 6th home run and stole his 14th base.
St. Louis 6 at Montreal 4
-Joe Ferguson’s 6th home run of the season capped a three-run 9th inning rally for the Cardinals. Al Oliver had tied the game in the 8th for the Expos with a single and scored the go-ahead run on a Larry Parrish double.
New York 7 at Philadelphia 5
-Times are tough in Philly as they lose three of four at the Vet to the last place Mets. Jesus Alou and Dave Kingman had three RBI’s each. Kingman’s came on his 15th and 16th home runs of the season.
San Diego 5 at Atlanta 7
-Mike Jorgensen, Darrell Evans and Darrel Chaney each drove in a pair as the Braves win the final four games of a five game set with the Padres. Winner John Montefusco (3.26) of the Braves and loser Alan Foster (3.42) of the Padres are each 10-11 following today’s decisions.
Los Angeles 10 at Cincinnati 6
-
The Reds decision to start Jack Billingham (10-9, 4.02) on three-days rest backfires as the Dodgers jump out to an 8-0 lead by the 2nd inning. The Dodgers win three of four at Riverfront.
San Francisco 1 at Houston 2
-Art Howe’s pinch hit home run in the 8th was his 4th of the season allowing the Astros to avoid a sweep versus the last place Giants. San Francisco outscored the Astros just 4-3 in the three-game set. Ken Forsch (28Sv, 2.43) only has one blown save on the season.

NL East: The Pirates maintain a 7 game lead on the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros extend their lead back to 5 over the Reds

American League:
Milwaukee 4 at Boston 5 (12)
- Carl Yastrzemski surprises the Brewers with his 3rd stolen base of the season in the 12th and would score on a Dave Rader RBI single as the Red Sox get a much needed win versus the pesky Brewers. Cecil Cooper(8HR)  continued to haunt his former mates with a go-ahead three run home run in the 7th for the Brewers, but Dwight Evans 16th home run of the season tied it in the 8th for Boston to send it to extras.
Baltimore 5 at New York 0
-What a Baltimore debut for Ross Grimsley (12-6, 3.98) as he combines with Dyar Miller (2.68) and Nelson Briles (5.33) on a two hit shutout. Grimsley was acquired from the Indians on Friday for a draft pick. Baltimore has won seven straight heading into a critical series with 2nd place Boston
Cleveland 9 at Detroit 5 (10)
-Otto Velez’s two-run double keyed a four-run 10th inning as the Indians avoid a four-game sweep in Motown
Texas 11 at Chicago 5
-Johnny Grubb (11HR) hit two home runs and Leon Roberts (14) and pitcher Steve Barr (1) also went deep as the Rangers win their 6th straight. Mickey Rivers stole his 50th base as the Rangers reach .500 for the first time since May 15th
California 2 at Minnesota 6
-The clock may have struck midnight for the rookie-laden Angels as they get swept in Bloomington and have lost six straight. Larry Hisle drove in three runs and Rod Carew knocked in two for the Twins who’ve won five in a row.
Oakland 9 at Kansas City 4
-Cliff Johnson (19), Billy Williams (22) and Fred Stanley (4) hit home runs for the A’s who avoid the sweep and a tie for 3rd with the Rangers with this victory. Dick Bosman (10-11, 3.34) went the distance for the A’s

AL East: The Orioles maintain a 2.5 game lead over the Red Sox. The teams play three games this week. Boston has one more game with the Brewers beforehand.
AL West:  The Royals lead remains 7 games over the Angels
