McRae Wins Another One for Runaway Royals



American League:
New York 4 at Chicago 3

Dick Tidrow racks up save #30 and Jerry Mumphery hit his first career home run as the Yankees edge the White Sox
Boston 8 at Minnesota 2
-Jim Rice, Bob Watson, Dwight Evans and Frank Duffy all knock in two as the Sox win for just the second time in eight games.
Baltimore 3 at Kansas City 4 (11)
-It’s just very hard to beat these Royals. K.C. was down 2-1 in the 9th and 3-2 in the 11th but rally to win the opener of a four game series between division leaders. George Brett’s double tied it in the 9th and Hal McRae’s double won it in the 11th. Frank White scored both of those runs.
Cleveland 3 at Texas 6
-Relievers jim Bibby (2-3, 4.14) and Jim Kern (23Sv, 2.01) pitched five shutout innings and Mickey Rivers drove in two and swiped his Al leading 53rd base for the Rangers
Detroit 5 at California 4
-Dave Collins (.345 40SB) has two stolen bases in three straight games and each Tiger position starter had a hit in tonight’s victory
Milwaukee 11 at Oakland 7
-Rookie sensation Danny Thomas (.;342 11HR) fell a double short of the cycle as the Brewers outmuscle the A’s in Oakland.

AL East: The Orioles lead is trimmed to 4 by the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals extend their commanding lead to 11 over the Angels

National League
Houston 16 at Chicago 6
-The Cubs continue to get drubbed as Mike Ivie and Art Howe each drove in three runs and Davey Lopes scores four times for Houston. The Cubs have a team ERA over 8.00 in an eight game losing streak.
Cincinnati 10 at Pittsburgh 4

Larry Biittner’s (6) three run home run in the 9th blows open a 5-4 game as the Reds earn a split of their two game NLCS rematch at Three Rivers. Dave Concepcion and four hits and Rawly Eastwick fanned three men in 1.2 innings to earn his 35th save.
Atlanta 1 at St. Louis 6
-
John Curtis (5-4, 4.57) went the distance and struck out eight and Bake McBride (.348 27SB) went 3-for-3 with a stolen base for the Cardinals
Montreal 3 at Los Angeles 4
-Recently acquired Ken McMullen’s 2nd home run of the season was his second in as many days and was the game winner in the 9th as the Dodgers have won four in a row
New York 6 at San Diego 5 (11)
-It was the Mets turn to rally as Jerry Martin hits a dramatic three-run double with two outs in the 9th off Rollie Fingers (3.28) and the Mets prevail in the 11th on a Jesus Alou sacrifice fly
 Philadelphia 2 at San Francisco 0
-Jim Lonborg (11-9, 3.12) doesn’t issue a walk in a four-hit shutout. He outduels Vida Blue (8-11, 3.58) who also went the distance.

NL East: The Pirates now lead the Cardinals by 10 games
NL West: The Astros maintain a 2 game lead on the Reds
