-Rookies star for the Mets as Phil Mankowski (4HR) hit a three run home run and Pat Zachry (5-2, 2.96) earned the win for New York
NY Yankees 1 at Philadelphia 4
-The Phillies have won four in a row as Mike Schmidt (26HR) and Greg Luzinski (19HR) each hite two run home runs in the victory. Tug McGraw (21Sv, 1.99) got the save for the second straight day
Minnesota 7 at Pittsburgh 4
-Dave May (19HR) has homered in his first two games as a Pirate but iut was not enough today as the Twins score four off Dave Giusti (4-6, 2.98) in the 8th to win
Milwaukee 7 at St. Louis 3
-The Cardinals have now lost four in a row as Don Money (7HR) and Ben Oglivie (5HR) each went deep for the Brew Crew
Detroit 5 at Atlanta 4
-Richie Hebner hit his 9th home run and Bill Freehan’s two-run double in the 9th broke a 3-3 tie as the Tigers win again in Atlanta.
Chicago WSox 0 at Cincinnati 1
- Bill Bonham (3.44), newcomer Will McEnaney (4-3, 3.91) and Rawly Eastwick (31Sv, 1.86) combine on the shutout. The only run was scored when Mike Lum drew a bases loaded walk in the 8th versus Pablo Torrealba (2-3, 2.82). Eastwick did not allow a run in 13 games in July, all Cincinnati wins he factored in (2-0, 11Sv). He wins the NL Pitcher of the Month.
California 4 at Houston 2
-Yesterday it was Ron Jackson, tonight it was Reggie who led the way for the Angels. He hit his 14th home run and Dave Goltz won his 14th (14-2, 3.10) as the Angels win the first two at the Astrodome.
Cleveland 4 at Los Angeles 5
-Jay Johnstone drives in three runs and Jerry Reuss (8-5, 3.88) earned the win as the Dodgers downed the fading Indians.
Oakland 4 at San Diego 7
-Al Bumbry (8HR) went 3-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI’s to lead the way for the Padres over the sinking A’s
Baltimore 4 at San Francisco 6
-Derrell Thomas, Gary Mattews, Von Joshua and Chris Arnold each had two hits as the Giants prevent the Orioles from taking sole possession of 1st in the AL East
AL East: All defeated. The Red Sox and Orioles remain tied with the Yankees 5.5 off the pace
AL West: The Royals maintain a 2.5 game lead on the Angels
NL East: The Pirates lead remains 5 over the Cardinals and the Phillies now as well. The Cubs are 6.5 games behind.
NL West: The Astros lead is trimmed down to 1.5 by the Reds and 6.5 by the Padres
ALvsNL: The NL leads 69-63 with just twelve interleague games left.. The league with the best record in the 144 interleague games earns home-field advantage in the World Series. A 4-8 mark for the NL tomorrow will get it done. If they go 3-9 and the leagues finish tied then the World Series team with the better record is awarded home-field advantage.
