Cubs, Foote Stun Reds at Riverfront

-The Padres explode for seven runs in the 3rd inning to chase Bill Lee (16-11, 2.64) as Randy Jones (17-4, 3.29) wins this matchup of ace southpaws.
San Francisco 9 at New York 6

The Giants rap out seventeen hits after only mustering three yesterday helping Ed Halicki (9-12, 2.80) earn a victory. Rob Andrews raised his batting average to .280 with five singles for the Giants.
Los Angeles 5 at Philadelphia 1

Billy North hit his first home run of the season and Andy Messersmith (16-7, 2.76) went the distance as L.A. beats Steve Carlton (11-10, 2.74) in this matchup of aces.
Pittsburgh 1 at Atlanta 3
-Dave Parker’s 4th inning infield single was the only hit the Pirates would register all day against Dick Ruthven (11-11, 3.76) and Max Leon (20Sv, 2.59). Darrell Evans hit his 26th home run of the season for the Braves
Chicago 3 at Cincinnati 2
-Barry Foote’s 4th home run of the year was the pinch-hit game winner in the 9th as the Cubs stun the Reds at Riverfront. Chicago will now look to complete the sweep tomorrow – possibly avenging last weekend’s destruction by the Reds at Wrigley.
St. Louis 1 at Houston 5
-Nolan Ryan (16-9, 3.13) pitched a complete game as the Astros defeat former teammate Bob Forsch (12-9, 4.42). Davey Lopes (.284 43SB) tripled and stole two bases for Houston.

NL East: The Pirates lead remains 11 over the Cardinals
NL West: The Astros extend their lead again, now lead the Reds by 4


American League:
New York 2 at Chicago 3 (10)

The Yankees took the lead in the Top of the 10th but Dick Tidrow (3-10, 2.10) blew a save for just the 3rd time in 34 opportunities as the White Sox prevail on a Cleon Jones sacrifice fly
Boston 5 at Minnesota 1
-Bruce Kison (12-11, 4.06)  and Skip Lockwood (32Sv, 2.37) factor in the decision and Frank Duffy drove in two runs and had three hits as the Red Sox will now go for the four-game sweep of the Twins tomorrow. Eric Soderholm (.316 28HR) homered and had three hits in a losing cause.
Baltimore 3 at Kansas City 4 (10)
-The Royals will go for a four-game sweep in this matchup of division leaders tomorrow after Hal McRae drove in George Brett with a game winning single in the 10th. Lindy McDaniel (5-5, 3.24) earned the win and Dyar Miller (7-4, 2.70) took the loss
Cleveland 6 at Texas 2
-Gorman Thomas smashed his MLB high 35th home run and Phil Niekro (9-13, 3.39) pitched a complete game as the Tribe handed Stan Perzanowski (17-4, 2.75) his second defeat of the week.
Detroit  0 at California 2
-Dave Lemanczyk (8-4, 3.32), Chris Knapp (5.24) and Jim Brewer (6Sv, 6.75) combine on a five hit shutout for the Halos.
Milwaukee 5 at Oakland 7 (12)
-Cliff Johnson’s 22nd home run of the year was a walk-off two run shot that gave him eight RBI’s in two days. Elias Sosa (4-5, 2.67) followed up on his save in yesterday’s game with three shutout innings to earn the win today.
AL East: The Orioles lead has been reduced from 5 games to 2 in three days by the Red Sox
AL West:  The Royals still hold an 11 game margin over the Angels
