Williams Wins it in Ninth For Rising Yankees


American League

Oakland 1 at Boston 2
-Dave Heaverlo (3-3, 3.86) cannot hold Don Sutton’s 1-0 lead in the 9th as Carlton Fisk’s RBI single scores Jerry Remy with the winning run as the Red Sox knock off the struggling A’s at Fenway to move into a tie for 1st with Baltimore
California 1 at New York 3
-Walt Williams (3) pinch hit two run home run in the bottom of the 9th off Mickey Scott (2-4, 3.60) wins the game for the Yankees in thrilling fashion. The Angels are now a half game up on the Royals in the West while the Yankees trail the Red Sox and Orioles by the same margin in the East
Minnesota 4 at Baltimore 3 (10)

Dan Ford tripled in the 10th and Rod Carew knocks him in with a single as the Twins win again in Baltimore as the O’s fall into a 1st place tie with Boston.
Chicago 5 at Cleveland 9
-Ross Grimsley (10-2, 3.18) earns the win and Otto Velez drives in three as the Indians are now four games out in the tightening AL East. Steve Stone falls to a miserable 2-11, 5.19 for Chicago.
Kansas City 1 at Detroit 0
-Jim Colborn (5-5, 2.71) and Marty Pattin (13Sv, 3.41) shut out the Tigers to move the Royals back into a 1st place tie with the Angels
Texas 2 at Milwaukee 1 (10)
-Lamar Johnson’s second RBI single of the game plated the go-ahead run for the Rangers in the 10th as Sparky Lyle (4-3, 2.70) earns the win in relief and Stan Thomas earns his first save as a Ranger.

National League
Atlanta 3 at Montreal 8
-The Braves lose their seventh straight as Dan Driessen hit his 5th home run and swiped his 13th base for the Expos. Chip Lang (1-3, 3.60) pitched 2.2 innings in relief for his first MLB win
Houston 7 at New York 0
-Lucky sevens for the Astros who win their 7th straight 7-0. Joe Niekro (3-3, 4.46) emerges from his mopup role to pitch a four hit shutout in this spot start and Cesar Cedeno hit his 8th home run and swiped his 19th base
Cincinnati 0 at Philadelphia 1
-The Reds lose ground again in the division as Larry Christenson (11-5, 3.57) tosses a three hit shutout to outduel Fred Norman (6-10, 3.72). The Phillies are just 2.5 out in the East
Pittsburgh 2 at Los Angeles 3 (10)
-
Phil Garner singles home the winning run in the 10th as L.A. hands the Pirates their fourth loss in five games
St. Louis 1 at San Diego 3
-The Padres have won five in a row to remain in a tie with the Astros. Dave Rader and Randy Hundley each hit their 2nd home runs of the season and Brent Strom improved to 4-5, 3.75. Not a bad outing for the Cardinals Larry Dierker but he falls to 1-10, 4.44
Chicago 2 at San Francisco 1 (12)
-Doyle Alexander (4.24) walks Dave Rosello with the bases loaded in the 12th to plate the winning run for the Cubs. Goose Gossage (5-4, 5.08) earned the win in relief and Bob Locker saved his 2nd game for the Cubs
