National League
Atlanta 9 at Montreal 3
-The Braves had lost seven in a row and they were facing June’s NL pitcher of the month Woodie Fryman but trends would reverse as they’d torch Fryman for seven runs in the first two innings. Dave May (14) and Ken Henderson (3) homered amidst the onslaught.
Houston 5 at New York 1
-The Astros sweep the Mets to win their 8th straight as rookie Bob Knepper improves to 3-1, 3.33 and Jon Matlack (4-10, 3.46) takes the loss
Cincinnati 3 at Philadelphia 1
-The Reds salvage a game at the Vet as Jack Billingham wins his 5th as a Red and Rawly Eastwick earns his MLB best 22nd save
Pittsburgh 6 at Los Angeles 0
-Rick Reuschel (9-5, 2.42) spins a five hit shutout as the Pirates extend their lead to 3.5 games on the Phillies. Bernie Carbo had two RBI’s for the Bucs
St. Louis 4 at San Diego 6
-For the sixth straight day the Padres maintain a share of 1st place with a victory. Al Bumbry drives in two and Randy Jones improves on his NL best win total and is now 12-3, 3.43.
Chicago 6 at San Francisco 5
-Andre Dawson had a pair of RBI’s and Bob Locker earned the save for the second straight day as the Cubs move into a 3rd place tie with the Cardinals in the East
American League
Oakland 7 at Boston 5
-A sorely needed victory for the A’s as they avoid the sweep at Fenway. Billy North’s single in the 8th plated the eventual game winning run
California 6 at New York 2
-Tommy John (10-6, 3.29) wins again as the Angels avoid the sweep in the Bronx. Reggie Jackson and Don Baylor each had two RBI’s for California in the win.
Minnesota 2 at Baltimore 5
-Jim Northrup laces a two run single as part of a four-run 8th as the Orioles rally to win and move back into sole possession of 1st place. The Orioles can’t be happy with a 3-7 mark in their past ten – all at home versus the rival Red Sox and the sub .500 Twins and White Sox.
Chicago 6 at Cleveland 5
-Another instance where a team avoids the sweep as Jim Spencer and Ralph Garr each drive in two for the White Sox in Cleveland. Pablo Torrealba (2-2, 3.00) pitched 2.2 innings for the win
Kansas City 3 at Detroit 5
-Five AL teams had a chance to complete sweeps today and none could do it. Dan Meyer hit his 3rd home run and Vern Ruhle (3-2, 3.87) won his 3rd game as the Tigers win and the Royals fall 1.5 games behind the Angels in the AL West
Texas 1 at Milwaukee 2
-A rare loss for Stan Perzanowski (1-2, 1.67) as Johnny Briggs ripped his 7th home run of the season and the Rangers could only muster one run against Eduardo Rodriguez (8-7, 3.73) and Bill Castro (6Sv, 2.45)
