Sutton Shuts Out Angels as A's Romp in Anaheim



American League
New York 0 at Boston 3
-The Red Sox have won 19 of 24 and seven straight starts by rookie Rick Krueger (6-4, 2.93) as he shuts out the Yankees at Fenway
Baltimore 5 at Cleveland 6
-The Indians rally from two runs down in the ninth for the second straight game as George Hendrick drives in the winning run with a single off Joe Kerrigan.
Detroit 5 at Milwaukee 3 (13)
-Bill Freehan’s 6th home run of the year was an opposite field game winner off Bill Travers (2-9, 5.34) as the Tigers prevail in extras at County Stadium. Five Detroit relievers shut the Brewers out for seven innings including game winner Glenn Abbott (1-1, 5.91)
Chicago 4 at Minnesota 5
-Another home run (19) and stolen base (22) for Bobby Bonds but It is in a losing cause as Pete Mackinin’s (4HR) three run shot in the 1st inning holds up as the game winning RBI for the Twins. Steve Stone falls to a miserable 2-12, 5.08 for Chicago.
Texas 4 at Kansas City 9
-Dennis Leonard guts out 144 pitches and improves to 12-5, 3.03 as eight different Royals score in the easy victory over the Rangers
Oakland 7 at California 0
-The A’s break an eight-game losing streak versus the Angels with a big victory in the opener of a three game set in Anaheim. Don Sutton (12-4, 2.55) pitched the shut out and Joe Rudi hammered his 15th home run for Oakland

AL East: The Red Sox extend their lead over the Orioles to 2 games and 5.5 over the Yankees. The Indians kept pace and are 6 games out
AL West: The Angels lead was trimmed to a half game by the Royals while the A’s trail by 2

National League
Los Angeles 4 at Chicago 1
-The Dodgers have won five in a row as Jay Johnstone and Ron Cey had three hits apiece and Burt Hooton (7-9, 3.59) pitched eight innings for the victory
San Diego 5 at Pittsburgh 3
-Lucky 13’s for the Padres as Dave Winfield hit his 13th home run of the season and Randy Jones improved to 13-3, 3.27 as the Padres take two of three at Three Rivers. Jim Rooker (7-6, 5.12) took the loss for the Bucs
San Francisco 3 at St. Louis 4
-The Giants took a 3-1 lead into the 9th but because of fatigue had to rely on Doyle Alexander (3-2, 4.13) and recently recalled Tom Bradley (5.40) to close the game. They could not. Alexander took the loss as Bradley gave up the game winning hit to Bake McBride. Greg Terlecky (5-4, 2.90) won in relief  for surging St. Louis
New York 3 at Atlanta 2
-It took a month but Dave Kingman (.191 10HR) hit his first home run as a Met and Craig Swan (4-11, 3.56) pitched a four-hitter as the Mets downed the struggling Braves in Atlanta.
Montreal 10 at Cincinnati 11
-A wild see-saw affair at Riverfront as the Reds sweep the Expos for the second time in as many weeks. The game winning run was scored when Chuck Taylor walked Mike Lum with the bases loaded in the 9th. Rawly Eastwick (2-2, 2.06) won two and saved the other in the three game sweep. Balls were flying out of the par as Andre Thornton (4), Dan Driessen (6), and Larry Parrish 2(11) went deep in vain for the Expos and Johnny Bench (26) and ex-Expo Bob Bailey (2) went yard for the Reds
Philadelphia 2 at Houston 4
-Joe Niekro (5-3, 3.98) has won three straight in his return to the rotation and Ken Forsch (22Sv, 2.66) was perfect again in 1.1 innings for the save as the Astros sweep a mini series from the Phils at the Astrodome. Davey Lopes swiped two bases (23) and had the game winning RBI.

NL East: The Pirates lead the Phillies and the hard-charging Cardinals by 4 games
NL West:
All winners. The Astros lead the Reds by 1.5 and the Padres by 2.5
