-A thrilling victory for the Cardinals as they win on Jim Dwyer’s bases loaded bunt in the bottom of the 12th. Reggie Smith - traded from the Giants earlier this season – had the other two RBI’s in the game for St. Louis. Montreal 2 at Cincinnati 3 (12 innings – game 1)

League
Minnesota 8 at Boston 11
-Typical Twins as they score three in the top of the 1st and give up seven in the bottom half – including a grand slam by Red Sox Pitcher Fergie Jenkins (10-3, 3.87). Steve Braun hit his 2nd and 3rd home runs of the season in a losing cause for Minnesota.
Chicago 3 at New York 6
-Lenny Randle had four hits and Don Gullett (10-4, 3.71) earned the victory as the Yankees salvage a game in this four game set with the White Sox. Dick Tidrow nailed it down for his 21st save.
Kansas City 3 at Baltimore 5 (10)
-Ken Singleton’s 14th home run of the season was the game winner off Bruce DalCanton (6-2, 2.86) to earn a split of this tightly contested four game set for the Orioles. Singleton’s batting average is also tops in the AL at .369.
Texas 9 at Cleveland 11
-Oscar Gamble didn’t start the game for the Indians – but boy did he finish it. His grand slam capped a six-run late inning rally by the Tribe as they stun the Rangers at Municipal Stadium. It was Gamble’s 18th home run of the season.
California 3 at Detroit 8
-The Tigers earn a split of their four game set with the AL West leaders as newcomer Richie Hebner drives in three runs and Vern Ruhle improved to 4-8, 3.82). The Angels only had three hits in the defeat.
Oakland 2 at Milwaukee 3
-It was crazy eights for the suddenly stingy Brewers staff as Mike Caldwell evened his mark at 8-8, 2.86 and Bill Castro improved his numbers to 8 saves and an 1.88 ERA. The Brewers won three of four from the fading A’s.
AL East: All winners. The Red Sox lead the Orioles by 1, the Yankees by 4.5 and the Indians by 6.
AL West: All losers: The Angels lead the Royals by 1.5 games and the A’s by 3
