Padres' McIntosh Two-HIts Cubs at Wrigley

National League
San Diego 5 at Chicago 0
-Steve Garvey (10) homered and drove in three while Joe McIntosh (10-3, 3.04) spun a two-hit shutout as the Padres hand the Cubs their fourth straight loss – all at Wrigley.
San Francisco 2 at Pittsburgh 5
-Dave Roberts return to Pittsburgh was a successful one as he allowed just one run in seven innings. The Giants however would tie the game in the top of the 9th. The Pirates would prevail in the bottom half as Willie Stargell launched his 17th home run of the season in what might by Tom Bradley’s (0-1, 15.43) final pitch of his career.
Los Angeles 6 at St. Louis 0
-Something had to give as two teams riding win streaks met at Busch Stadium and it would be the suddenly road-warrior Dodgers who’d prevail. Rookie Don Stanhouse (4-5, 3.15) tossed the shutout and Ron Cey had three hits again for L.A who chased Bob Forsch (10-4, 3.61) from the game in a five-run 2nd inning.
Philadelphia 5 at Atlanta 3
-Steve Carlton (7-7, 2.77) gave up solo home runs to Chris Chambliss (4), Dave May (16) and Jerry Royster (2) but his teammates would erupt for four runs in the 6th to win the game. Tony Perez had three RBI’s for the Phils.
New York 0 at Cincinnati 4
-The Reds receive surpising power from Buddy Bell and Rick Auerbach who each hit their 2nd home runs of the season as Jack Billingham evens his overall mark at 8-8, 4.18 with the six-hit shutout. It was Billingham’s 7th win as a Red. Tom Seaver (7-5, 3.27) took the loss for the last place Mets.
Montreal 4 at Houston 5
-The Astros rally from 4-1 down in the 8th to tie it and would win in the 9th on Mike Ivie’s sacrifice fly,. Davey Lopes led off the 9th with a single before stealing his 25th base of the year and eventually scoring the winning run. Ken Forsch was outstanding again in relief and improves to 4-3, 2.61

NL East: The Pirates maintain a 4 game lead of the Phillies and the Cardinals fall to 5 games out
NL West:
All winners once again. The Astros lead the Reds by 1.5 and the Padres by 2.5

American League

New York 4 at Boston 1
-A much needed victory for the Yankees as Luis Tiant (10-4, 2.67) and Dick Tidrow (22Sv, 1.89) slow down the champs. Ken Griffey upped his average to .339 with three hits including the game winning RBI
Baltimore 4 at Cleveland 2
-Tommy Harper’s 7th home run of the season was a three-run shot to erase a 2-run deficit in the 5th off Phil Niekro (6-8, 2.96) as the Orioles even up their series in Cleveland at a game apiece.
Detroit 5 at Milwaukee 3
-The Tigers take down the Brewers 5-3 again, this time in nine innings.  Milt Wilcox (7-9, 4.09) earned the win and Dave Collins (.340) the game winning RBI. Milwaukee’s Ben Oglivie hit his 4th home run of the season – he hit an MLB high 48 for the Tigers last year.
Chicago 7 at Minnesota 6
-Bobby Bonds two-run triple in the 8th vaulted the White Sox into a lead they would not relinquish. Eric Soderholm (19HR) hit two balls out of the Met in a losing cause for the Twins.
Texas 6 at Kansas City 7 (10)
-The Rangers rally from 6-2 in the 8th and 9th but Frank White’s fourth hit of the game scored the wining run for K.C. in the 10th as the Royals overcome another shaky performance by their bullpen.
Oakland 12 at California 13
-Billy Williams (19HR) hits two home runs and drives in seven runs but the A’s still lose as the Angels pound out 17 hits in the victory. The scores went: 2-0 A’s, 2-2, 5-3 A’s, 6-5 Angels, 8-6 A’s, 10-8 Angels, 12-10 A’s and finally 13-12 Angels courtesy Bill Melton’s two run double and Dave Chalk’s sacrifice fly in the 8th. Tom Walker (2-1, 6.91) got the win – but didn’t quite earn it – while Dave Hamilton (7-3, 2.47) was saddled with the loss

AL East: The Red Sox lead is trimmed to 1 by the Orioles with the Yankees 4.5 behind and the Indians 6 games out
AL West: The Angels still lead the Royals by a half game while the A’s trail by 3
