Montreal had an eight game winning streak coming in. Al Oliver – acquired from the Pirates yesterday in a major deal that sent John Candelaria the other way – went 0-for-4 in his Montreal debut.

-Ferguson Jenkins (12-4, 3.53) outmatches Tom Seaver (8-6, 3.05) in a tight game at Shea. Skip Lockwood (25Sv, 2.68) struck out two in the ninth for the save
NY Yankees 1 at Philadelphia 2
-Tom Hutton (6) homered and Steve Carlton (9-8, 2.53) earned the win as the Phils hang on to nip the Yankees. Tug McGraw (20Sv, 2.01) got Bert Campaneris to fly out to end a Yankee 9th inning threat
Minnesota 2 at Pittsburgh 8
-A revamped Pirates lineup jumps out to an 8-0 lead in the 2nd and cruises to victory. Dave May hit his 18th home run in his first game since being acquired from the Braves while rookie Omar Moreno went 2-for-5 with his 8th stolen base and two runs scored in his first game as the starting CF replacing the departed Al Oliver.
Milwaukee 8 at St. Louis 4 (10)
-The Brewers tie it in the 9th off all-star closer Mark Littell (7-5, 2.01) and defeat him in the 10th with a four run uprising. Ed Kirkpatrick’s third hit of the game was a key double in the 10th as he helps out his former team the Pirates who dealt him to the Brewers over the All-Star Break.
Detroit 16 at Atlanta 13
-Not a Lions-Falcons score here – the Tigers rally from 7-2 down to win a slugfest at Fulton County Stadium. Johnny Knox, Bill Madlock and Ivan DeJesus each drove in three runs for the Tigers while Ken Henderson and Pete Varney drove in four each in a losing cause for Atlanta.
Chicago WSox 7 at Cincinnati 1
- Ralph Garr (8HR) smacked a 3-run shot off Gary Nolan (11-7, 3.52) and Jerry Koosman (14-4, 2.97) went the distance as the Sox halt the Reds four-game win streak. Dan Driessen - acquired over the break from Montreal - was hitless in his Cincinnati debut
California 12 at Houston 7
-Ron Jackson (6HR) hit two home runs and drove in six as the Angels rough up Nolan Ryan (11-9, 3.54) in ending the Astros 6-game win streak. Ed Herrmann did hit a three-run triple in his first at-bat as an Astro – he was acquired from the Expos in a three-way deal that sent Enos Cabell to the Giants.
Cleveland 2 at Los Angeles 3
-Phil Garner’s RBI single in the bottom of the 9th earns the Dodgers the victory. The Indians had tied it in the top half off LA’s new closer Mike Garman (4-1, 2.87); the Dodgers traded closer Elias Sosa to the A’s over the All-Star Break
Oakland 2 at San Diego 3
-Danny Frisella (6-5, 3.03) pitched two shutout innings in relief to earn the win and Steve Garvey hit the game-winning single in the bottom of the 9th off A’s newcomer Elias Sosa. Dave Hamilton (7-4, 3.53) was charged with the loss
Baltimore 4 at San Francisco 2
-Not a good Giants debut for Pedro Borbon (6-3, 4.53) as he gives up three runs to the Orioles in the 8th and takes the loss. Borbon was acquired from the Reds over the All-Star Break
AL East: The Red Sox and Orioles remain tied with the Yankees falling to 5.5 off the pace
AL West: The Royals remain 2.5 up on the Angels with defending division champion A’s falling to 7.5 out
NL East: The Pirates raise their to 5 on the Cardinals and remain 6 up on the Phillies
