American League
New York 1 at Boston 3
-The Yankees steal five bases including three by 1975 stolen base leader Sandy Alomar who has 25 this year – but didn’t get on the basepaths enough as Diego Segui (1-2, 3.16) and Skip Lockwood (23Sv, 2.38) combine on a two-hitter. Jim Rice’s two run double in the 6th was the game winning RBI.
Baltimore 10 at Cleveland 8 (10)
- Bobby Grich’s led off the 10th with his 10th home run of the year and the Orioles would add two more runs in the inning to defeat the Indians. Lee May (7) and Juan Beniquez (9) also homered for the Orioles and Grant Jackson (4-2, 2.73) pitched two perfect innings for the win
Detroit 5 at Milwaukee 6
-Don Money hit his 6th home run of the season in the 8th and hit the game winning single in the 9th as the Brewers rally from 5-2 down to avoid the sweep versus the Tigers. Detroit – who’ve spent the entire season in last place – would’ve moved to just a half game behind the Brewers had they hung on.
Chicago 4 at Minnesota 8
-In the west’s battle of the basement Rod Carew homered and drove in three runs and Vic Albury (4-5, 4.18) pitched three innings for the win as the Twins take two of three from the White Sox.
Texas 3 at Kansas City 6
-John Mayberry’s 7th home run of the year was majestic game winner off the usually dominant Jim Kern (2-2, 1.77) as K.C. completes the sweep of the Rangers. Recently acquired Ken Sanders (2-3, 3.86) got the win in relief for the Royals.
Oakland 9 at California 6
-Huge series win for the A’s as they nearly blow another big lead – 7-2 this time – but Joe Rudi’s 16th home run of the season provided the necessary insurance in the 8th. Dave Heaverlo (15Sv, 4.26) shook off some recent struggles and pitched two perfect innings for the save. Fred Lynn homered and had three hits to improve to .327 22HR in a losing cause for the Angels
AL East: The Red Sox remain 1 game up on the Orioles while the Yankees (5.5) and Indians (7) lose ground
AL West: The Royals retake 1st place, moving a half game up on the Angels and 2.5 up on the A’s.
National League
San Diego 2 at Chicago 5
-Recalled late last week because of a busy schedule, rookie Ken Kravec (2-0, 3.80) may be here to stay for Chicago as he wins for the second time in five days. Steve Ontiveros (6) and Bobby Murcer (13) hit home runs to help halt the Cubs four-game slide.
San Francisco 1 at Pittsburgh 0
-Tough to pitch a one-hitter and lose but that’s exactly what happened to Dock Ellis (4-9, 3.74) who did not allow a hit after Von Joshua’s RBI single in the 1st. Jim Barr (6-8, 3.30) would only allow two hits to Rennie Stennett as he shuts out the Pirates in a game that only saw one run and two men left on base.
Los Angeles 6 at St. Louis 12
-The Cardinals trip up the Dodgers with a seven-run explosion in the 7th inning as they victimize L.A’s relief ace Elias Sosa (3-3, 2.84) for five of those runs. Reggie Smith, Ted Simmons, Jim Dwyer and Mario Guerrero each had multi-RBI games for St. Louis
Philadelphia 10 at Atlanta 11 (11)
-The teams combine for 33 hits and 6 home runs in a classic Fulton County Stadium slugfest. The final hit of the barrage was Pete Varney’s 4th home run of the season to win it off Dan Warthen (1-1, 7.11) . Philadelphia starter John Denny (4.68) didn’t make it out of the 1st inning but the Phils would rally from that 6-1 deficit to eventually send it to extras.
New York 2 at Cincinnati 1
-Dave Kingman may finally be getting untracked as his pinch-hit home run was his second in three days and was the difference as the Mets slow down a streaking Reds team. Pedro Borbon (6-2, 3.57) gave up the home run while rookie Pat Zachry (4-1, 2.81) earned the win for New York.
Montreal 6 at Houston 2
-Bill Lee (10-8, 2.33) and twelve hits by the Expos spoils the Astros opportunity to gain on all of their pursuers in the NL West. Nolan Ryan (10-8, 3.29) struck out eight in seven innings but takes the defeat.
NL East: The Pirates remain 4 game up on the Phillies, while the Cardinals tie the Phillies again for 2nd
NL West: No change for a third straight day as this time they all lost. The Astros lead the Reds by 1.5 and the Padres by 2.5 games.
