Padres and Winfield Wallop Pirates

National League
Houston 4 at Philadelphia 6
-Greg Luzinski (17HR) homered twice as the Phillies end the Astros eight game winning streak. It was a matchup of two pitchers who’ve dropped off from their 1975 performances as John Denny (5-9, 4.17) gets the better of J.R. Richard (6-8, 5.06). The Phils draw closer to the Pirates while the Astros fall out of their 1st place tie with the Padres
Chicago 0 at Los Angeles 4
-Andy Messersmith (10-5, 2.79) tosses a three hitter and Bill Russell had the game of his season. Russell went 4 for 4 with two steals, hit his 2nd home run of the year and drove in three runs.
Pittsburgh 2 at San Diego 18
-Every now and then the Pirates lack of pitching depth is exposed and it sure was here. It was lucky sevens for the Padres who in their 7th in a row thanks in part to Dave Winfield’s seven RBI’s. It was ugly for Pittsburgh as they made six errors.
St. Louis 4 at San Francisco 2
-Reggie Smith hit his 20th home run of the year in his return to San Francisco. The Giants traded him to the Cardinals earlier this season for prospects and picks. Mark Littell struck out the side in the 9th for his 17th save.

American League

Baltimore 10 at Chicago 9
-
The Orioles trailed 8-4 in the 9th but Bobby Grich’s 7th home run was a three run blast to tie it and Tommy Harper’s 4th home run would give the O’s a 10-8 lead. The White Sox would get one in the bottom half but Rudy May (7Sv, 3.61) would get Marc Hill to fly out to end it.
Cleveland 7 at Minnesota 4
-The Twins may want to consider becoming a barnstorming team as they fall to 13-25 at the Met and are 22-20 on the road. Gorman Thomas hit his MLB best 25th home run.
Milwaukee 0 at Kansas City 4
-Dennis Leonard (11-5, 3.05) strikes out ten and three-hits the Brewers as the Royals are just a half game out in the West
Detroit 6 at Texas 9
-Johnny Grubb’s 7th home run of the year broke a 6-6 tie in the 8th and made a winner of the unhittable Jim Kern (2-1, 1.17).
Boston 4 at California 3
- 1975 MVP Bob Watson is finally coming around. He was named player of the week earlier today and then hits a two-run single in the 8th off Dave Goltz (11-2, 2.69) to vault the Red Sox to victory. The Angels Fred Lynn has homered in all four games against the Red Sox played in the last eight days.
New York 5 at Oakland 6 (10)
-Joe Rudi (14) and Gary Thomasson (6) hit two-run home runs in the 8th to erase a 5-1 deficit and the A’s win it in extras on a bases loaded walk to move 1 game behind the Angels in the AL West. Thomasson’s home run came off Dick Tidrow – just the second blown save for the rubber armed Tidrow who’s already appeared in over 50 games.
