Mets Blank Braves in Both Ends of Doubleheader

National League
Cincinnati 4 at Montreal 2 (game 1)
-Bill Bonham (9-6, 3.91) pitched eight strong innings, Rawly Eastwick saved his 23rd game and Johnny Bench smacked a three run shot in the 1st as the Reds 1975 leaders lead the way today
Cincinnati 5 at Montreal 3 (game 2)
-Bench (23HR) homers in both halves the doubleheader and Eastwick (24Sv) earns the save in both as the Reds pick up 1.5 games on the Padres and Astros in the NL West
Atlanta 0 at New York 6 (game 1)
-Rookie Pat Zachry (2-1, 3.29) shuts out the free-falling Braves at Shea in game 1
Atlanta 0 at New York 3 (game 2)
-
Tom  Seaver’s (7-4, 3.56) turn to blank the Braves who don’t plate a run in a doubleheader at the last place Mets. Willie Montanez had four hits in the doubleheader. The Mets acquired him from the Braves last week.
Houston 2 at Philadelphia 3
-Nolan Ryan (10-6, 3.23) and Ken Forsch both walk in runs in a three-run Phillie 8th as Philadelphia continues to put the pressure on Pittsburgh in the NL East
Chicago 5 at Los Angeles 3
-Doug Rau falls to 4-11, 3.52 as five Cubs have two hits including winning pitcher Geoff Zahn (8-6, 4.35)
Pittsburgh 6 at San Diego 2
-
Omar Moreno (2), Dave Parker (11)  and Al Oliver (10) all hit home runs in a four-run Pirate 9th as the Bucs bounce back from last night’s 18-2 bludgeoning. Oliver’s home run was his second of the game. Kent Tekulve (5-4, 2.08) pitched two shutout innings for the win
St. Louis 13 at San Francisco 9
-The Cardinals pound out 22 hits including three each by the first five men in their batting order. Among them were former Giant Reggie Smith and Ted Simmons (18HR) who hit a pair of home runs and drove in five.

American League
Baltimore 5 at Chicago 6
-Yesterday Bobby Grich and Tommy Harper homered in a 9th inning Oriole rally, today they were at it again as Harper doubled home Grich with two out in the 9th to tie it. However pinch hitter Aurelio Rodriguez would hit his 1st home run as a member of the White Sox in the bottom of the 9th as the Sox prevail.
Cleveland 17 at Minnesota 4
-The misery at the Met continues for the Twins as Mike Wiley (4-6, 5.29) and Ray Corbin (7.62) absorb the brunt of the damage. Oscar Gamble drove in five and Ray Fosse knocked in four for the Tribe. Cleveland sits in 4th place but are just four games out in the East.
Milwaukee 5 at Kansas City 1
-A rare loss for Paul Splittorff (15-3, 2.20) as Bill Champion (4-9, 3.82) and the Brewers get the best of him tonight.
Detroit 7 at Texas 2
-Milt Wilcox (6-8, 3.95) earned the win and Bill Campbell pitched three innings for his 2nd save as the Tigers trounce Texas
Boston 2 at California 0
-Here’s the Bruce Kison the Red Sox have been waiting for! A two hit shutout for the 1975 AL Cy Young as he improves to 7-8, 4.68 and the Red Sox tie the Orioles for 1st place. Boston sweeps a mini two-game set  at the Angels. Jim Rice hit his 24th home run and had three of the Red Sox four hits.
New York 4 at Oakland 3
-Lenny Randle (4) and Sandy Alomar (3) homered as the Yankees receive power from unlikely sources to pick up a game on the Orioles in the East. The A’s had a chance to  leapfrog the Royals and tie the Angels atop the AL West
