-Steve Swisher had three hits and Mark Littell recorded his 16th save as Bob Gibson (9-4, 3.41) and the Cardinals down the Cubs.
Houston 4 at Atlanta 2 (11)
-Mike Ivie’s 21st home run was the game winning two-run shot in the 11th off Ron Reed (0-3, 5.58) as the Astros sweep the Braves. Ken Forsch (3-3, 3.00) pitched two shutout innings for the win. The Astros have won five in a row and the Braves have lost five in a row.
San Francisco 0 at Cincinnati 1
-Joe Morgan led off the 1st with a single, stole second and third and scored on Pete Rose’s double for the game’s only run. Morgan has 38 steals and Rich Hinton (5-2, 3.26), Pedro Borbon (3.15) and Rawly Eastwick (21Sv, 2.57) shut out the Giants
Los Angeles 6 at San Diego 10
-Home runs by Luis Melendez (2) and Steve Garvey (8) help the Padres to a sweep of the Dodgers as they remain in a tie for 1st with the Astros. Jerry Johnson (3-0, 1.30) pitched 3.1 innings of shutout relief for the win

-Fred Lynn homers in all three games of the Angels series win at Fenway. Today he hit his 18th and Frank Tanana improved to 11-5, 2.65 with the win

-Rookie Mike Norris (5-2, 3.61) and Dave Heaverlo (14Sv, 3.68) combine on the four-hit shutout as the A’s avoid the sweep and remain two back of the Angels
Chicago 1 at Baltimore 5
-The Orioles salvage a game against the last place White Sox to restore a two game lead in the AL East. Mike Torrez (9-5, 3.49) pitched a three hitter.
