Koosman WIns 11th for Suddenly Surging ChiSox

American League
Minnesota 2 at Boston 1
-The Twins only had two hits but one of them was Eric Soderholm’s 17th home run of the season and that would provide all the runs they would need to halt a six-game losing streak. Bill Butler (3-6, 3.97) and Mike Marshall (6Sv, 4.48) shut down Boston who were riding a five game win streak heading in.
Chicago 3 at New York 2
-The White Sox have won a season high five straight as Jerry Koosman (11-4, 3.11) and Stan Bahnsen (10Sv, 4.76) get the better of Catfish Hunter (7-7, 3.48)
Kansas City 4 at Baltimore 1
-Paul Splittorff (16-3, 2.17) adds to MLB best win total and Ken Sanders pitched two shutout innings in relief in his Royals debut as K.C. ends a five-game slide. Sanders was acquired in a trade from the Mets late last night. Former Royal Nelson Briles was recalled from the minors to make the start today for the Orioles and he falls to 3-3, 6.96
Texas 9 at Cleveland 1
-Mike Cubbage hit his 2nd home run of the season and drove in five runs as the Rangers maul the Indians. Rookies starred as Lee Mazzilli scored three runs  and Tommy Boggs improved to 8-6, 2.86. Rick Waits (6-9, 5.68) was chased from the game in the third inning as he continues to have a nightmarish 1976.
California 15 at Detroit 4
-The Tigers pitching has been outstanding lately, but not today. Dave Chalk and Bob Boone each scored three runs while Fred Lynn and Don Baylor drove in three and Ron Jackson drove in four for the Angels. Boone (4), Lynn (20), Baylor (15) and Ron Jackson (5) all went deep as Milt Wilcox (6-9, 4.22) and Bob Reynolds (7.56) absorbed the brunt of the damage for Detroit.
Oakland 6  at Milwaukee 3
- A clean sweep by the AL West in AL East parks today was completed by the A’s. Sonny Siebert improves to 7-6, 3.72 and Cliff Johnson smacked his 15th home run for Oakland

AL East: The Red Sox and Orioles remain tied; 3.5 up on the Yankees and 6 up on the Indians
AL West:
The Angels continue to lead the Royals by 1.5 and the A’s by 2

National League
San Francisco 2 at Chicago 8 (game 1)
-
It was a matchup of southpaws who were promoted from the minors for emergency starts as Ken Kravec (1-0 , 4.70) pitched eight innings strong for his first MLB win for the Cubs while Pete Falcone’s (1-1, 17.28) stay with San Francisco will likely last just these 2.1 innings. Bobby Murcer – released by the Giants this season – had a double, his 11th home run and had three runs and three RBI’s.
San Francisco 5 at Chicago 4 (11inn – game 2)
-The Giants rally from 4-0 down to end their eight-game losing streak. Gary Matthews hit a two-run single to tie it in the 9th and Rob Andrews drove in the winning run with his 11th inning single. The maligned Giants bullpen pitched five perfect innings as Tom Griffin (3-10, 6.04) and Doyle Alexander (1Sv, 3.72) earned the decisions.
Los Angeles 9 at Pittsburgh 4
-Every few games the Pirates lack of pitching depth is exposed – this time it was the Dodgers pounding Eddie Soloman (4-3, 4.93) and Larry Demery (9.82). Rick Monday (8) and Steve Yeager (9) each homered and drove in three while Andy Messersmith improved to 11-5, 2.82
San Diego 4  at St. Louis 7
-
Padres opening day starter Bill Greif (3-4, 6.36) returned from the minors for an emergency start and gave up five runs in 4.2 innings to take the loss. Bake McBride raised his average to .322 with four hits including his 6th home run for the Cardinals. Bob Gibson improves to 10-4, 3.91.
Montreal 2 at Atlanta 0
-Bill Lee (9-8, 2.42) spins a masterful five-hitter as the Expos hand the reeling Braves another defeat. Rookie Bill Almon scored both runs for the Expos and stole two bases.
Philadelphia 0 at Cincinnati 5
-Make it seven in a row for the Reds as Pat Darcy (3-3, 3.63) tosses  a five-hitter in a spot start and George Foster launchd his 18th home run of the season. John Denny (5-10, 4.24) takes another loss and he was not helped by his defence as the Phils committed four errors.
New York 1 at Houston 2
-It was a day of many spot starts as Mike Cosgrove (4.73) made an effective one for the Astros but did not factor in the decision.  Tony Scott’s RBI single in the 7th scored the winning run as Gene Pentz (2-0 2.84) earned the win in relief and Ken Forsch recorded the final five outs for his 20th save.

NL East: Pittsburgh leads the Phillies by 4.5, the Cardinals by 6.5 and the Cubs by 7.5
NL West:
The Astros extend their lead to two games over the Padres who are now tied for 2nd with the red-hot Reds
