Dwyer Squeezes St. Louis Past San Diego After Teams Complete Trade

National League
San Francisco 2 at Chicago 3
-Rob Sperring’s RBI single in the 9th gives the Cubs a 3-1 series win over the Giants. Tom Griffin (3-11, 5.85) got the decision in three of the four games in the series for the Giants. Bruce Sutter (7-4, 3.16) struck two in his one inning of work and was credited with the win.
Los Angeles 9 at Pittsburgh 4
-The Dodgers win 9-4 on consecutive days in Pittsburgh as Phil Garner went 5-for-5 for L.A. and Dusty Baker (10) and Ron Cey (11) homered. The Pirates are sorely in need of pitching depth and acquired Dave Roberts from the Tigers for Richie Hebner yesterday. Roberts however started on Friday for Detroit so it’ll be a few days before he can help.
San Diego 2 at St. Louis 3
-
The Cardinals commit four errors and leave fourteen men on base but it was Rollie Fingers (2-2, 2.68) throwing error in the 9th that proved the most influential on the outcome as it plated the winning run for the Cardinals. These teams made a trade last night as the Padres acquired Catcher Steve Swisher for OF Luis Melendez. Swisher pinch hit in this game and popped out to end the top of the 9th against eventual winner Mark Littell (6-4, 1.92). Melendez did not appear for St. Louis.
Montreal 11 at Atlanta 10 (12)
-Darrell Evans couldn’t quite rescue a game for the beleaguered Braves. Evans hit three home runs and has 15 on the season as the Braves rally from 10-2 down in the 7th to take the game to extras. John Milner would put the Expos back ahead in the 12th on an RBI single off Dick Ruthven (7-7, 3.82) who was forced into the game because of a taxed Braves bullpen. Seldom used Dan DeMola struck out two Braves for his first save for the Expos, including Evans for the final out..
Philadelphia 4  at Cincinnati 0
-The Phillies only scored one run through the first 24 innings of this series before scoring in the final three innings today to end the Reds seven-game winning streak. Tony Perez hit his 10th home run, Jim Lonborg (9-4, 2.80) earned the win and Tug McGraw his 17th save
New York 3 at Houston 2
-Jesus Alou went 2-for-4 for the Mets against his former team and rookie Pat Zachry improves to 3-1, 3.25 with the win. Tom Hall (2Sv, 6.48) earned the save for the Mets. Both Alou and Hall were signed recently from the free agent pool by the Mets

NL East: Pittsburgh lead was trimmed by the Phillies  (3.5) Cardinals (5.5) and the Cubs (6.5)
NL West:
All three contenders lost so the Astros hold a two game lead on the Padres and Reds.

American League
Minnesota 4 at Boston 6
-The Twins commit four errors including two by 1B Tony Oliva who was released following the game. Bruce Kison evened his mark at 8-8, 4.75 and Skip Lockwood saved his 22nd for Boston.
Chicago 5 at New York 0
-Chicago has won six in a row as they’ll look to complete a stunning four game sweep at New York tomorrow. Rookies Bart Johnson (4-8,, 4.45) and Pete Vuckovich (5.05) restrict the Yankees to just two Walt Williams hits and Bobby Bonds hit his 18th home run, stole his 20th base and scored four runs for the White Sox.
Kansas City 3 at Baltimore 1
-The Royals get back to winning low scoring games with two straight here in Baltimore. Jim Colborn (6-6, 2.63) earned the win today while Bruce DalCanton notched his 3rd save.
Texas 5 at Cleveland 7
-The Indians blow an early 5-0 lead but score two in the 8th off the usually reliable Sparky Lyle (4-4, 2.66) and Jim Kern (1.27) to prevail. Otto Velez hit his 2nd home run and drove in four for Cleveland.
California 10 at Detroit 6
-The Angels score in double digits in consecutive days in Detroit as Don Baylor hit his 16th home run. scored three and drove in three. Richie Hebner went 1-for-5 in his Tigers debut, he was acquired from the Pirates for Pitcher Dave Roberts yesterday.
Oakland 2  at Milwaukee 3 (12)
- Hank Aaron’s RBI single in the 11th gives the Brewers the victory. Bill Castro (2-1, 1.96) pitched three shutout innings for the win. Milwaukee has a team ERA of 2.89 in their past 21 games
