-Milt May and Ken Reitz each hit their 7th home runs of the season as part of a six run Giants 1st inning. The Cubs would rally from 7-0 down to take an 8-7 lead into the 9th but Willie McCovey would hit his 12th home run to tie it. Rookie Catcher Bruce Kimm would eventually drive home his fifth run of the game in the 10th as the Giants get outlasted in a slugfest on consecutive days and have lost seven straight.

-The Pirates haven’t had any decent pitching beyond their top three starters and top three relievers but hopefully this shutout is a turning point for Jim Rooker (7-5, 5.06). Dave Parker stayed hot with two hits and two RBI’s

-Joe Ferguson’s three run triple capped a six-run Cardinal uprising in the 8th as offseason acquisition Bob Forsch (10-3, 3.58) helps his former team the Astros by beating the Padres
San Diego 3 at St. Louis 2 (game 2)
-Doug Rader’s 4th home run of the season was a pinch hit game winner in the 7th off Eric Rasmussen (7-7, 3.20) as the Padres earn the split. Rollie Fingers earned his 20th save
Montreal 10 at Atlanta 2
-John Milner (8HR) hit a pair of home runs and drove in five and Clay Kirby (2-1, 5.28) wins in his return from the free agent pool as the Expos hand the Braves their 11th loss in 13 games
Philadelphia 1 at Cincinnati 2
-Jack Billingham’s (7-8, 4.50) best performance as a Red is preserved by Rawly Eastwick’s 26th save as the Reds win their 6th straight. All runs were scored on solo home runs – Sixto Lezcano (10) for the Phillies and Joe Morgan (12) and Johnny Bench (25) for the Reds
New York 2 at Houston 8
-Reserve outfielder Tony Scott is making a push for more playing time as he drives in four runs and raises his average to .340 as the Astros win easily. Davey Lopes swiped three bags and Cesar Cedeno had one steal as each upped their stolen base totals to 20. J.R. Richard (7-8, 4.98) lowers his ERA below 5 with the win.

Eric Soderholm raised his average to .330 and Larry Hisle hit his 18th home run as the middle of the order continues to be lethal for the Twins but the pitching just isn’t capable. Skip Lockwood earned his 21st save for the Red Sox who’ve won five in a row while the Twins are on a six game slide

-Jim Kaat (4-6, 3.14) earned the win and Bobby Bonds (17), Marc Hill (1) and Rusty Torres (6) all homered as the White Sox tie the Twins at the bottom of the AL West standings.

-The hard times continue for the Royals as Ellie Hendricks laces the game winning hit off ruce Dal Canton (6-1, 2.67) in the 9th. Steve Luebber (4.02), Rudy May (3.62) and winner Grant Jackson (3-2, 2.96) combined for the three hitter for the Orioles
Texas 2 at Cleveland 3
-Phil Niekro (6-7, 2.94) and Dan Spillner (6Sv, 3.42) lead the Indians to the win over Jackie Brown (5-9, 4.33) and the Rangers
California 4 at Detroit 9
-The Tigers continue to play spoiler against the AL West this week as they rap out 17 hits and explode for six runs in the 8th to win their season high fourth in a row. Dave Collins had four hits and John Hiller (3-5, 2.83) pitched two perfect innings for the win. Tom Walker (1-1, 7.22) allowed five earned runs without recording an out for California.

- The A’s are reeling losing this time to Eduardo Rodriguez (6-7, 3.61) and the Brewers. Ben Oglivie’s 1st inning double staked the Brewers to a lead they’d never relinquish.
