San Francisco 3 at NY Yankees 1
-Jim Barr (7-8, 3.11) hasn’t allowed an earned run in 19 innings and he drove in two runs as the last place Giants win consecutive games in the Bronx. The Yankees made a big trade with the Rangers last night acquiring pending free agent Sparky Lyle and SS Bert Campaneris and a 3rd Rd pick for Paul Lindblad, Ed Brinkman and a 1st Rd Pick. Lyle pitched three shutout innings tonight but Campaneris went 0-for-5 with an error.
Chicago Cubs 1 at Baltimore 3
-Ellie Hendricks ripped his 12th home run of the season and Mike Torrez (10-7, 3.61) pitched seven shutout innings as the Birds down the Cubbies
Atlanta 2 at Cleveland 1
-Dave May’s 17th home run of the season broke a 1-1 tie in the 9th as the Braves edge the Tribe. Frank LaCorte (4-1, 3.24) defeated Dan Spillner (2-5, 4.22) in relief.
Houston 11 at Detroit 4 (19)
-The Astros survive seven shutout innings of relief by John Hiller, Jim Crawford and Bill Campbell until they were able to hang seven runs on Bob Reynolds (1-2, 9.92) and Jim Slaton (8.19). NL Batting Leader Greg Gross (.356) got the game winning RBI in the 19th inning eruption. Houston relievers combined for 14 innings of shutout relief – capped by winner Fred Scherman’s (4-2, 2.08) recording of eleven outs

- Four Brewers had multi-hit games and Robin Yount (6) and Danny Thomas (7) each went deep for Milwuakee

-Mike Schmidt’s 25th home run staked the Phils to a 3-1 lead in the 3rd but Bobby Bonds 23rd home run was a grand slam in the 8th off Steve Carlton (7-8, 2.68) to win it for the Sox. Jerry Koosman improved to 12-4, 3.20 for Chicago.
Los Angeles 14 at Minnesota 3
-It’s possible that the largest scores being posted on the Metropolitan Stadium scoreboard this year are being done by visitors of the Twins, not the Vikings.
New York Mets 3 at Kansas City 8
-Ken Sanders - acquired from the Mets this month – pitched the final three innings for his 2nd save as KC opens up a big lead late to down the Mets. Paul Splittorff is now 17-3, 2.23 and has a shot at having 20 wins at the All-Star Break
San Diego 3 at Texas 7
-The Rangers fair better than the Yankees the day after the trade as a five-run 6th inning leads them over the struggling Padres. Former Yankee Stan Thomas – not involved in last night’s trade – improved to 2-2, 2.95 with the complete game win. Rookie SS Mark Wagner – vaulted to a starting role with the departure of Campaneris – went 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.

-Light-hitting Denny Doyle would stun eventual winner Kent Tekulve (6-4, 2.21) with a game tying home run with two outs in the 9th. The Pirates prevail however in the 11th on a wild pitch by Terry Forster (2-4, 4.76). Rookie Wayne Nordhagen had three RBI’s for the Pirates, while Don Baylor hit his 18th home run and drove in four for the Angels.

-The 4th straight win on the coast for the Expos as Bill Lee (11-, 2.18) takes the NL ERA lead with his 4th shutout – also tops in the NL. Dan Driessen smacked his 9th home run and drove in four runs for Montreal.
