Carter's Blast Helps Expos Embarrass A's

Interleague Play
St. Louis 5 at Boston 10
-Last year’s Cy Young and MVP delivered today as Bob Watson went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI’s and Bruce Kison (10-8, 4.69) hit a grand slam to cap a seven-run 8th inning for Boston
San Francisco 1 at NY Yankees 3
-The Yankees go a disappointing 2-4 in home series versus the Cubs and Giants, winning the finale only in each. Tom Underwood (10-8, 3.33) and Dick Tidrow (23Sv, 1.77) earned the decisions for New York
Chicago Cubs 4 at Baltimore 3
-Rudy Meoli’s 2nd home run of the season broke a tie in the 8th as the Cubs prevail. Relievers Ramon Hernandez (4-3, 3.00) and Bruce Sutter (10Sv, 3.39) combined for three perfect innings to close out the Orioles. Juan Beniquez drove in all three runs for Baltimore.
Atlanta 4 at Cleveland 5
-Ed Crosby’s two run double in the 8th vaulted the Indians to victory. Dan Spillner (3-5, 4.07) earns the win in relief a night after taking the loss
Houston 5 at Detroit 1
-The Astros complete the sweep and get a much needed complete game from rookie – and NL wins leader – Mark Lemongello (15-4, 2.26). The team’s played 19 innings last night
Cincinnati 7 at Milwaukee 0
-Cesar Geronimo ripped his 7th home run and drove in three runs while Bill Bonham (10-8, 3.60) and Pedro Borbon (4.25) shut out the Brewers
Philadelphia 0 at Chicago WSox 4
-It’s not easy to have ten hits, including three each by the first two men in the order (Garry Maddox and Sixto Lezcano) and get shutout -  but that’s what happened to the Phillies today. Bart Johnson (6-8, 4.05) and Stan Bahnsen (11Sv, 4.66) combined on the save
Los Angeles 6 at Minnesota 13
-Eric Soderholm (.326 22HR) hit two home runs and had six RBI’s as the Twins build a 13-0 lead. More than enough even for Minnesota’s pitching staff to protect.
New York Mets 0 at Kansas City 5
-Jim Colborn (7-6, 2.54) tossed a three hitter and Tom Poquette and Buck Martinez had two RBI’s each for the 1st place Royals. Bruce Boisclair had all three hits for the Mets and Jon Matlack (4-13, 3.76) saw his NL leading loss total expand for the Mets
San Diego 4 at Texas 6
- The Padres rough up All-Star Stan Perzanowski (2.18) but Roger Moret (1-1, 3.95) and Jim Kern (18Sv, 1.60) combine for six innings of shutout relief as the Rangers add to the Padres woes
Pittsburgh 2 at California 3
- The Pirates Bert Blyleven (2.88) and Angels Dave Lemanczyk (3.22) dueled until the game was scoreless in the 8th. Each team scored in the 8th and 9th, the winning run scoring when Kent Tekulve (6-5, 2.51) walked Merv Rettenmund with the bases loaded in the 9th
Montreal 9 at Oakland 1
- The Expos embarrass the A’s 24-3 in a three game sweep. Gary Carter had three hits including hjs 10th home run of the season and John Candelaria (8-7, 2.92) pitched eight shutout innings for the win. The Expos blew it open with seven in the 9th

AL East: The Red Sox extend their lead on the Orioles to 1.5 games
AL West: The Royals maintain a 2 game lead on the Angels with the A’s now trailing by 6
NL East:
The Pirates lose but remain 3.5 up on the Cardinals and 5.5 up on the Phillies
NL West:  The Astros maintain 2.5 on the Reds and the struggling Padres fall 6.5 behind
ALvsNL: All tied up at 34. The league with best record in the 144 interleague games earns home-field advantage in the World Series
