Cobra in Command at Candlestick as Pirates win in Extras

National League
Houston 3 at Montreal 1 (game 1)
-Joe Niekro (4-3, 4.10) pitches his second straight complete game since returning to a starting role.
Houston 5 at Montreal 0 (game 2)
-The Expos get swept at home in a doubleheader for the second time in three days. Every Astro in the lineup had a hit and rookie Bob Knepper’s (4-1, 2.85) outing fell just one out shy of a complete game..
Cincinnati 7 at New York 4
-The Reds take care of business by going 4-0 at the lowly Expos and Mets Monday-Thursday. Rawly Eastwick recorded the final out for his MLB best 25th save. George Foster went 3-for-3 and drove in three runs for the Reds
Atlanta 7 at Philadelphia 5
-Sixto Lezcano (9) and Mike Schmidt (22) hit back to back home runs in the 8th to tie it but the Braves would bounce back with two in the 9th off the usually reliable Tug McGraw (3-4, 2.17) to gain a split at the Vet.
St. Louis 5 at Los Angeles 6
-The Cardinals score three in the 9th but Stan Wall comes out to earn his 1st career save by retiring Bake McBride and Steve Swisher with two men on to end it. Lee Lacy went 4-for-5 for L.A.
Chicago 3 at San Diego 7
-Doug Rader is making a case for more playing time. He hit his 3rd home run of the season and raised his average to .333 in the win. 1975 NL batting champ Al Bumbry is hitting .282 this season swiped his 27th and 28th base for the Padres.
Pittsburgh 10 San Francisco 7 (11)
-Dave Parker’s fifth hit of the day was a leadoff double in the 11th to ignite a decisive three run rally against beleaguered Giants relievers Randy Moffitt (1-3, 8.44) and Rob Dressler (6.60). Parker had two doubles, his 12th home run and 7th stolen base. Mammoth day for the Cobra.

NL East: Pirates pick up a game on  the Phillies (3.5), Cardinals (7) and Cubs (8)
NL West:
The Astros win two to take sole possession of 1st. The Padres are a half game out and the Reds trail by two.

American League
Cleveland 3 at Chicago 4
-Dan Spillner (1-3, 3.50) walked Tony Muser with the bases loaded in the 9th to plate the winning run for the White Sox. Gorman Thomas hit his MLB high 26th home run in a losing cause for the Tribe
Baltimore 8 at Minnesota 2
-Bobby Grich homered for the second straight day and Wayne Garland improved to 9-3, 2.46 with the complete game victory
Detroit 7 at Kansas City 4
-The Tigers explode for seven runs in the 8th as the Royals and their bullpen are beginning to resemble last year’s squad. Steve Busby (4.15) had been cruising through seven and he received no relief from loser Marty Pattin (1-4, 4.43)
Milwaukee 1 at Texas 7
-Mike Cubbage and Darrell Porter each drove in three runs and Stan Perzanowski improved to an incredible 12-2, 1.65 as the Rangers win easily in Arlington
New York 10 at California 1
-Lenny Randle (6HR) led off the game with a home run and followed with a grand slam in the 2nd inning as the Yanks bomb rookie Chris Knapp (0-2, 3.48) and the Angels. Ed Figueroa (5-7, 4.10) may have quelled some trade rumours with the complete game win  -or showcased himself depending on your perspective.
Boston 3 at Oakland 2
-The A’s and Royals continue to mirror each other as the A’s blow a 9th inning lead. Dave Heaverlo (4-4, 4.47) gave up a two-run single to pinch-hitter Frank Duffy in the 9th. The Red Sox sweep a pair of two-game sets at the Angels and A’s.

AL East: The Red Sox and Orioles both win to remain tied for 1st. The Yankees are 2.5 back and the Indians fall to 6 off the pace
AL West:
All losers. The Angels lead the Royals by 1.5 and the A’s by 2
