Cedeno Sends Astrodome into Frenzy

Interleague Play:
Chicago WSox 3 at Chicago Cubs 6
-Rookies Andre Dawson and Wayne Tyrone each had three hits and Larry  Gura (6-5, 4.04) earned the win for the Cubs
Boston 1 at Montreal 6
-The Expos are the hottest team in baseball as they follow up a 5-1 road trip at the Angels and A’s with this easy win over the defending champs. Rusty Staub hit his 15th home run and Steve Rogers (5-8, 3.43) pitched a complete game
NY Yankees 8 at NY Mets 7 (16)
-The Yankees rally from 5-0 down in the 6th to outlast the Mets in the opener of the Subway Series. Ken Griffey celebrated his selection to the All-Star Game with the game tying home run in the 9th off Mets All-Star representative Bob Apodaca and later rapped the game winning double in the 16th
Baltimore 2 at Philadelphia 1
-The Phils have crashed back to .500 as they leave fourteen men on base including the bases loaded in the 9th as they lose a frustrating one to the Orioles. Rudy May got Garry Maddox to line out to end it for his 11th save
Detroit 4 at Pittsburgh 3
-Dave Collins had two hits, two RBi’s and his 24th stolen base as the last place Tigers win at the first place Bucs. Pittsburgh got a run in the 9th and had the tying run on 3rd but John Hiller (9Sv, 3.28) got Rennie Stennett to fly out to end the threat
Kansas City 3 at St. Louis 8
-Interesting move by the Cardinals who decide to start All-Star closer Mark Littell (7-4, 1.93) as he hadn’t pitched in four days and with the All-Star Break beginning after this weekend. The move paid off here as he pitched eight inning s strong while the Cards roughed up KC all-star Dennis Leonard (13-6, 3.14) for six runs in 3.1 innings. Lou Brock – also an All-Star – had four hits including three doubles for the Cardinals
Milwaukee 1 at Atlanta 4
-Roric Harrison (4-8, 4.22) gets his first start in a while and he makes the most of it as he pitches eight innings for the victory. Chris Chambliss (7) and Rowland Office (3) hit home runs for Atlanta.
Cleveland 2 at Cincinnati 3
-Rawly Eastwick racked up his 30th save as the Reds nip the Tribe in the battle of Ohio. The Reds stole four bases including two by Dave Concepcion (16 SB)
Texas 2 at Houston 3 (10)
-Cesar Cedeno lines a double into the left-field corner in the bottom of the 10th off recently acquired Paul Lindblad (3-3, 4.05) as the Astros send the Dome into a frenzy with another victory
California 6 at Los Angeles 12
-The Dodgers can suddenly put up some numbers as they survive four Angels home runs to double up their cross-twon rivals. Dusty Baker hit his 11th home run and drove in four and Boog Powell went 4-for-4. Elias Sosa (14Sv, 2.56) pitched two perfect innings for the save.
Minnesota 3 at San Diego 0
-Just the second shutout of the season tossed by the horrific Twins pitching staff as their “ace” – who they had released during spring training -  Jim Hughes (4-6, 3.43) blanks to the free-falling Padres. All-Star Eric Soderholm ripped his 23rd home run for the Twins
Oakland 5 at San Francisco 2
-Gary Thomasson – acquired from the Giants a year ago – hit his 10th home run as the A’s get off the schneid across the Bay at Candlestick. Ed Halicki (6-11, 3.07) is going to the All-Star Game as the Giants representative despite his W-L record – which is all you need to know about the Giants season.

AL East:
The Orioles tie the Red Sox for 1st place.  The Yankees move ahead of the Indians into 3rd place and are 5.5 games behind
AL West: The Royals remain 2.5 up on the Angels, while the A’s make a game back and are 5.5 out
NL East:
The Pirates are just 2 up on the charging Cardinals, while the Cubs move into 3rd place ahead of the floundering Phils who are remain 6 games behind
NL West:  The Astros and Reds keep winnings as the lead is 2.5 for Houston. The Padres have lost four straight to fall 7.5 off the pace
ALvsNL: The NL takes a 43-41 edge in the first of six-days of games in NL parks. The league with the best record in the 144 interleague games earns home-field advantage in the World Series
