-Bobby Valentine (.327 5HR), acquired from the Mets two weeks ago, hits his first two home runs as a Padre to account for all the scoring as Joe McIntosh (6-1, 2.00) scatters eight hits in the shutout

-Recently demoted reliever Rich Hinton (3-2, 4.54) was recalled for a spot start and he combines with Clay Carroll (1.86) and Rawly Eastwick (2.37) on the 4-hit shutout. George Foster (.301 15HR) homered for the Reds.
