Valentine's Hits First Two Padre Home Runs in Victory

-Craig Swan (3-7, 3.02) outduels Ray Burris (3-3, 3.26) as Jerry Martin’s (.311) RBI double in the 7th plates Phil Mankowski with the game’s only run
Montreal 2 at Philadelphia 12

Mike Schmidt (.270) went 4 for 5 and Garry Maddox (.236) and Johnny Oates (.289) each drove in three as the Phillies rap out 16 hits and benefit from three Montreal errors.
St. Louis 1 at Pittsburgh 2
-The Bucs edge the Cardinals by a run again as rookie Eddie Soloman (3-0, 2.08) – acquired from the Cardinals after spring training – combined with Sam McDowell (1.79) and Kent Tekulve (14 Sv, 2.16) on a five-hitter. Larry Dierker (4.36) pitched well but fell to 1-8 for St. Louis

Cesar Cedeno (.309) came off the bench today and ripped a go-ahead two run single in the 8th to make a winner of Nolan Ryan (8-4, 3.12) who struck out ten Braves
San Diego 3 at Los Angeles 0
-Bobby Valentine (.327 5HR), acquired from the Mets two weeks ago, hits his first two home runs as a Padre to account for all the scoring as Joe McIntosh (6-1, 2.00) scatters eight hits in the shutout
Cincinnati 4 at San Francisco 0
-Recently demoted reliever Rich Hinton (3-2, 4.54) was recalled for a spot start and he combines with Clay Carroll (1.86) and Rawly Eastwick (2.37) on the 4-hit shutout. George Foster (.301 15HR) homered for the Reds.


American League
Boston 5 at Cleveland 6
-Gorman Thomas (.250 20HR) was at it again as he capped off a six run 5th with a grand slam as the Tribe down the BoSox and struggling Cy Young Bruce Kison (6-6, 5.15). Carlton Fisk (8), Jim Rice (17) and Bob Watson (5) homered in a losing cause for Boston
Baltimore 9 at Detroit 6
-The Orioles jump out to a 6-1 lead on rookie Frank MacCormack (1-3, 6.92) and outlast the Tigers for their eighth straight win. Mike Flanagan (1-1, 7.11) won his first major league game and Juan Beniquez hit his 6th home run and drove in three
New York 5 at Milwaukee 1
-Ken Griffey (.346 6HR) homered and had three RBI’s helping Catfish Hunter to even his record at 5-5, 3.90
Chicago 2 at Minnesota 7
-A monster day at the Met for Larry Hisle (.310 14HR) as he doubled, hit two home runs and drove in six. Paul Hartzell (2-3, 3.69) pitched just the second complete game of the season for Minnesota
Oakland 2 at Texas 1
-Billy Williams (.337 13HR) hit a two run home run in the 1st and it was held up by Dick Bosman (6-5, 3.16), Dave Hamilton (2.34) and Dave Heaverlo (12Sv, 3.38) as the A’s move into first place ahead of the Royals.
Kansas City 7 at California 10
-Paul Splittorff (12-1, 1.84) finally gets beat as the Angels score four runs off him in four innings. Fred Lynn (.332 13HR) homered and drove in three for California
