Thomas Pads Home Run Lead as Tribe Roll Over Red Sox

-Gorman Thomas (.249 19HR) added to his MLB best total with a pair of home runs and Ross Grimsley improved to 7-1, 2.55 as the Indians end a six game losing streak

The Orioles have won seven in a row as Mike Torrez (7-3, 3.14) pitched eight strong innings. Baltimore is 16-2 versus Milwaukee and Detroit this season

-Don Money (.238) and Kurt Bevacqua (.246) each went 3 for 3 and Mike Caldwell (6-5, 2.84) earned the victory as each team’s respective six game streaks are over

Cliff Johnson (.328 12HR) homered twice and drove in six and rookie Mike Norris improved to 4-0, 3.02 as the A’s move into a temporary tie with the Royals atop the AL West pending results in California

-Dennis Leonard (8-4, 3.07), Bruce DalCanton (1.87), Don Hood (4.35) and Lindy McDaniel (4Sv, 3.94) combine on a three hitter outdueling Frank Tanana (8-5, 2.50) and the Angels. California falls 4.5 games out in the AL West

-Terry Harmon’s (.240) first home run of the season helped the Phillies to a 6-0 lead against Expos ace John Candelaria (6-4,3.04) and Tug McGraw (10Sv, 3.40) would stave off an Expo rally for the save
St. Louis 2 at Pittsburgh 3
-The Pirates score two in the ninth off closer Mark Littell (3-3, 1.95) to steal one from St. Louis. Gene Tenace was walked with the bases loaded to score the winning run in a tough loss for the 3rd place Cardinals who are now five behind the Pirates

-Dick Ruthven (6-4, 3.82) does not record an out in tonight’s start as the Astros jump out to a 6-0 lead to give Bob Knepper (1-0, 3.21) his first major league win in this his fourth start. The free-falling Braves have lost nine of ten
San Diego 1 at Los Angeles 3
-Phil Garner’s (.254 2HR) two run home run off Danny Frisella (4-2, 2.41) in the 7th gives the Dodgers a win over the division leaders. Andy Messersmith (8-3, 3.13) and Elias Sosa (11Sv, 1.74) held the Padres to just an Al Bumbry (.311 6HR) solo home run

-The Giants are suddenly surging as rookie Jack Clark (.248 3HR), Gary Matthews (.301 8HR) and Rob Andrews (.309 2HR) all went deep in this one.
