Detroit 6 at Cleveland 5
-Rookie Terry Humphery (.231) hit his first major league home run in the 9th, a three-run shot to stun the suddenly struggling Harry Parker (3-6, 5.23) and the Indians. Gorman Thomas (21), Ray Fosse (3) and Toby Harrah 2 (12) combined to hit four home runs in a losing cause for Cleveland.
Boston 4 at Milwaukee 2 (game 1)
-Carl Yastrzemski (.255) hit his fourth home run and the game winning single in the 9th as the Sox take the first of two at County Stadium
Boston 4 at Milwaukee 2 (game 2)
-The Sox take both games by identical scores as Skip Lockwood (12Sv, 3.04) closes out both games and Boston picks a game and a half up on Baltimore in the AL East.
Oakland 7 at Chicago 6 (11 innings – game 1)
-The White Sox erase a 6-0 deficit but the A’s prevail thanks to three shutout innings from Dave Hamilton (6-1, 2.09) and Willie Horton’s (.267) game winning single in the 11th
Oakland 6 at Chicago 4 (game 2)
-Joe Rudio (.288 10HR) hit a pair of home runs and drove in four, assisting Don Sutton (11-2, 2.40) to another victory. The A’s move ahead of the idle Royals for 1st place with the doubleheader sweep
Texas 3 at California 4 (11)
-Bob Boone’s single in the 11th drove in rookie Ron Jackson with the winning run. Terry Forster (2-3, 4.80) pitched two shutout innings for the win
National League
Pittsburgh 5 at Chicago 6
-Bruce Kimm (.261) drove in three as the Cubs build a 6-2 lead on Rick Reuschel (7-5, 2.35) and hold off the first place Bucs at Wrigley
St. Louis 0 at Montreal 5
-Rusty Staub (.289 12HR) finished a double shy of the cycle and Woodie Fryman (4-1, 2.88) struck out eleven in a masterful 3-hit shutout as the Expos drop the Cardinals below .500
New York 7 at Philadelphia 11
-The Phils pound out 18 hits and move to 3.5 behind the Pirates in the East. Larry Christenson improved to 10-3, 3.46 and Tug McGraw (2.28) pitched two shutout innings for his 11th save
Los Angeles 4 at Atlanta 2
-Lee Lacy (.272 3HR) hit a pinch hit two-run home run in the 8th to tie it and the Dodgers scored two more in the 9th to tie the faltering Braves for 4th in the NL West. L.A. has won 7 of 9 and Atlanta has lost 10 of 12
Houston 10 at Cincinnati 11
-The Reds tie the Astros for 2nd place as they outslug them at Riverfront. Jose Cruz (.289 5HR) homered and drove in five but it wasn’t enough for the Astros. 1975 Cy Young J.R. Richard (5.59) and recently acquired Jack Billingham (5.13) each gave up six earned runs in the early innings for their respective clubs. The game was tied at nine after four innings.
San Francisco 5 at San Diego 10
-The Padres lead in the West is three games as they pound out 16 hits including home runs by Mike Hargrove (.245 1HR) and Bobby Valentine (.329 6HR)
